in a  spare bedroom i have i want to make it a grow room for vegetables and fruits  (tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, blueberries, cucumber, etc....) it is 12 ft by 10- ft.   with central air conditioning it is 72 degrees (can't turn air off live in FL way to hot) if i close the ac vent flaps, making only a little air come out, the temperature gets to be about 75, more ideal for plants. just wondering if the vent being constantly (mostly) closed can screw anything up over time?

i am mostly following this guys advice from youtube  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olxw2JWHEPk

No. It will be fine to limit the AC in the room.

Just for the record. Blueberries grow on a Bush and cucumbers on a vine. You sure those are two things you want to put in a small room? They will take up a lot of space.

Check out rareseeds.com and look at their Dragon Egg Cucumbers. They are small. That's the kind I am growing now in my garden and they taste great. They are a white cuke and you can eat them with the skin.

Your best bet is to grow your vegetables outside in the sunlight. If you do not have a large yard to plant a garden, you can build boxes to grow them in. My brother (a certified executive chef) has 5 grow boxes and grows everything from tomatoes to herbs (think rosemary, thyme, oregeno and such) to cucumbers as well as other vegetables. He has even canned his own tomato sauces and BBQ sauces with the tomatoes and herbs he grows.

Growing indoors mean you will need to use grow lights which create heat which will cause an increase in the use of the AC in the rest of your house/apartment. Also, using grow lights will increase your power bills which will negate the savings you would have by not buying vegetables at the grocery store or farmers market.

i am guessing in my apartment if i keep the door closed of the grow room, i should be ok with it not effecting the ac to much, the ac sensor is in a far location from that room.  the cfl lights i will use don't get hot to the point where you will burn your hand if you touch it. no yard at all to grow on, not until i buy something with land in 1-2 years. if my electric bills adds up to more then i will eat from my plants i will stop it, gotta try it first.  i tried some blueberrioes from my bush growing on my balcony.  cool that your brother grwos that stuff.

My Ma also grows blueberries and herbs. Her rosemary plant is almost 6 feet tall, and at least 3 feet across. It took a couple of years for blueberries to grow. She thinks she will have enough to make blueberry jam next year (she has been growing them for at least 3 years now). You are going to need a net once yours start coming in or the birds will get them.

Even in an apartment, you should be able to build a grow box outside to put soil in to grow some of what you want. Who knows, other neighbors may want to join in doing some, that is if your complex would allow it. At my apartment, I built a small patio out of pavers to put my grills and smoker. I want to see about growing some rosemary myself.

As long as he vents the heat out the house, he will be fine. Even if he doesn't, as long as he keeps the door closed, the heat will stay in the room and not effect the AC.

I'll buy some "tomatoes" and some "blueberries" from you if you give me your number.

Throw some weed in there as well.

i am in a second floor apartment, the ground level is heavily sprayed by landscapers i would never grow anything down there.

You might need a dehumidifier.

Unless you like moldy rooms.

thanks that is what i figured

YouTube is full of interesting videos on how to grow mushrooms in fish tanks and storage containers, it's much easier to control a localized environment than it is to maintain an entire room. There's all kinds of methods to employ on measuring and controlling humidity, temperature, and even CO2 levels (which helps things grow). However, from the looks of it one must be very clean and sterile not to contaminate batches. But it's amazing how seemingly quick this stuff can grow if you knew what you're doing... and here's like how quickly they grow in like 50 hours, of course preptime takes longer
