So lately I've been going on drinking binges for 2-3 days or so beer and whiskey mostly. It is interfering with my work and such. I believe I'm drinking to try and relive all those great party times I've had drinking. Its getting to be a problem and making me really lazy. Anyone have any suggestions for defeating this or learning how to moderate ?

Do have a history of Alcoholism in your family? If so stop drinking now before you spiral to a place that you definitely don't want to be.

I guess what you really miss is the socializing. Try hanging out with friends without having to 'drink,' see if it makes you happy.

I love that movie so much, one of my all time favs.

On a side note one time I ended up in a hospital on that 24 hour watch to check your mental status. Each room was private and had its own tv. Wouldent you guess the movie that was on was One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. =)

I've only seen bits and pieces of the movie, but I've read the book like 5 times. I did a 6th grade report on it.(that didn't end well)

I can't handle commercials for stuff like that, I'll rent it down at West Coast Video. Another good Jack Nicholson movie is The Bucket List.

AA wont do anything for you. You have to make the decision yourself and follow through.

That's same with my dad, except he wasn't in the Navy and he did drugs. I think to quit, you have to want to quit, and people I know say AA didn't work for them. But it's different with everyone. Get support from family/friends, and try to live without it. If you can admit you have a problem, that's a good start.

Don't buy any booze. Also, get a job or a responsibility so you can't drink. And maybe go to AA if you can't deal with it yourself.

It's good you're feeling guilty about it anyway – those who don't trends to lead to greater troubles and destruction. Talk to someone if you really feel it is impeding your ability to function, but probably don't rely upon AA for now I'd say – their view is one of 'no cure only management', which equates to reliance for life, which probably isn't necessary at this stage (or ever according to some). A lot of people have gone through such periods (me included) – you'll get through it fella

work before pleasure, if you want to get trashed every night thats fine, as long as it does not mess with your work. try running or extended walks after work, the mental cool down and physical workout help me sleep, and unless you can drink when your sleeping, problem solved

Thanks for all the kind and caring replies. Yes, as of now I am a "functioning" alcoholic as they call them. I do fine with my work but anything besides that has deteriorated. I have ceased exercising for months, eat badly, social life is terrible except the alcoholics I hang out with. Definitely time for a change and I am someone who prides myself on willpower so this is serious. It's just so hard when the drink gives me such a good feeling and helps me get laid. It just all feels so wrong when I am inebriated constantly.

AA is like any other therapy. It's for people that want a quick easy fix.

Life is depressing, it's not gonna be aparty forever. That's part of growing up. Life sucks and it's depressing. That's why people start working overtime and sleep longer.

I hate beer but I try to stay away from whiskey, gin, and vodkabecause I'm a drinker. Not alcoholic, I just drink constantly. It doesn't matter what it is. It could be water, pop, lemonade or whatever. I just drink constantly. So if I were to drink booze on a regular basis I would be drunk forever as well twice as broke. And I would die early of excessivealcohol consumption.

AA

or you could try just not drinking on your own. theoretically speaking you just took step one and admitted to having a problem.

or you could get really drunk and fall into a bonfire. I hear that is a one step program.

Girlfriend or wife complaining about your booze breath and unkempt appearance? TELL HER TO SHUT IT AND MAKE YOU A SAMMICH, OR SHE GETS THE BOTTLE NEXT

To be completely honest I wouldent either simply because they really force the religion on you. They force the idea that you are incapable of doing anything yourself and you need a higher power to believe in to get yourself on the right track. They make you feel like you have 0 control over yourself and you never will be able to do anything by yourself. I just diden't know who else to recommend to the TC.

I would just seek a therapist or get a new group of friends who are not all about drinking. Find a hobby that you can do with them that takes you away from that atmosphere.

Get new friends who don't drink and party so hard. It's not a party if you're by yourself. Other than that... you recognize the problem, so just stop doing it. You just need willpower... stop doing it.

*Shrugs*

If he REALLY has a problem, then AA is better than nothing. It just doesn't sound to me like he really has a huge problem. It sounds less like he drinks because he's a bona-fide alcoholic, and more like he merely drinks a lot in order to fill some kind of void in his life. He just doesn't seem like an alcoholic, though he may BECOME an alcoholic if his behavior lasts long enough.

But I agree on one thing...at least for right now, he probably doesn't need AA. He just needs to exercise more personal discipline, and stop using alcohol as a crutch for the things that are lacking in his life. AA can remain an option for later if all else fails. But right now, he just needs to buckle down and get his life in order.

Wow, brutally honest. Hey, at least you recognize you have a problem. I do not judge, as I myself have been battling an opiate pain killer dependancy since 2004 due to severe back problems. Thing is, I tried to justify to myself at first that since the docotrs give me the meds, it ok ! It didn't help that my Oncologist also would give me 200 Percocet 10's every 12 days for dealing with pain from chemo either. Anyhow, you are the only one that can truly help you. You are on the right track at least by asking for help and recognizing the problem. Confide in a (non-alcoholic) friend or family member and look into AA or other programs if you need. There is also detox as well. I have found one of my biggest issues was hangin around other users and being in an enabling relationship (My GF loves my meds as well). Good luck man, I wish you the best.

Like I said AA is for people that want a quick easy fix. They want someone or something else to fix their problem. Like when fat people buy intomiracle weight loss BS. They aren't gonna put any effort into losing weight they just want someone or somethingto do it for them. Same deal with AA.

As for the others... Most people don't voluntarily go to AA, someone forces them into it. Like their family, a spouse or a judge.

We all need a little prop for one reason for another in our lives, and tbh if you're dependent on AA, you're probably a pretty chronic Type B alcoholic (one who doesn't feel a great deal of guilt about consuming alcohol – something the TC seems not to be).

There is a view that alcoholism can be cured rather than managed – I studied it the best part of 15 years ago now so Christ knows where to find it.

Getting whoopsied 2-3 times per week isn't particularly uncommon – as MrGeezer said above, it's where that can lead to and the reasons behind it that you've got to watch.

2-3 day binges don't make a person an alchoholic. If a person drinks till they passout, and can't go on with your day without having a drink in the morning to keep your hands from shaking.... then yes possibly they are. If you really want to quit or cut down, then you should use some will power and quit. If that doesn't work then seek some counciling from AA or something. There are always people out there to help.

Take some psychedelics- they were used in the 50's to cure alcoholism and addiction and it had the highest rate of success among other methods
