He is surely amazing, but I would say Julius Caesar or Hannibal is better tactician (in the case of Caesar, better politician as well)

i'd say he is one of the greatest tacticians of history and better than the likes of Genghis,Ceasar and Hannibal, mainly because of the situations he was faced with and overcame like they were 2nd nature.

but one thing i will say is.

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules

Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.

But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare.

With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadiers.

Those heroes of antiquity ne'er saw a cannon ball,

Or knew the force of powder to slay their foes withal.

But our brave boys do know it, and banish all their fears,

Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

Well, I gotta prove how progressive I am, so let me think here...

"Wars not make one great."

No, Yoda said that.

"He killed a lot of people."

No, someone in the thread said that.

Oh, here we go: "He's a dead white male. Who cares?"

Yeah. Top that.

this. The Grecian Empirewasn't that big though was it? I know they conquered much of the Media-Persia Empire and some of Cannan fell under their rule, but what was the full extent of the empire? The Mongols though, basically owned all of Asia; only Japan and India were missing :|

this aint barren

China and the arabic areas obviously no (although lots of land in between civilized areas), but a lot of the rest of it was barren stretches of land. That pic doesn't show the full extent of the empire at its peak, by the way.

BluRayHiDef

He should have been called Genghis the Great! Alexander was fairly great but, making his Army march home through the desert makes him look like an ass.

Besides, some people think that 1 of every 200 people in the world today could trace their roots back to Genghis. Now that's a man that knew how to Conquer and Partay!!!!

Probably the greatest military leader in history. When you contrast him against others like Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Genghis Khan, you have to remember many of them looked to him and his strategies for clues. That's how "Great" he was. But I think the simple fact that he forged an empire (though short lived) from Greece to India three hundred years before Christ was born tells you how awesome he was.

The only things he did that benefitted humanity happened well after his death. He connected Europe to Asia, and allowed all the societies along the route to exchange goods and ideas (Greek philosophy was most definitely somewhat influenced by Middle Eastern and Indian ideas, and vice-versa). I find it odd how he is considered some kind of "hero" or something, his hubris is not something to envy.

He wouldn't know how to manage, mastermind and fight the fast paced, small scale battles and skirmishes alongside the prolonged guerilla resistance that makes up modern warfare.

They are fought differently, and are governed by completely different politics.

Alexander's father had much to do with that success.. His father was the one that banded most of Greece together which gave him the army he needed to conquer land.. His father also was the one that revolutionized the specific hoplite formation Alexander used.

He did unseat the Zoroastrian government and destroyed a large portion of the Avesta (much like the Spanish destroyed Mayan texts). As a scholar of Zoroastrianism, I resent Alexander for this as well. There is a rich history in Ancient Iran, and a lot of it is being forgotten unfortunately. It doesn't help the Parsi community is literally killing their own religion by enforcing a strict non-conversion clause and only allowing "pure blood" Indo-Iranians to become Zoroastrians (there are only about 200,000 left in the world despite being one of the biggest religious communities right before Alexander's time).

Alexander linked a lot of cultures together, but he also isn't someone to be revered. He destoryed a lot of things along the way as well.

well he burnt down the city of persepolis and libraries that had all of the persian histories written. so he just wiped out all the ancienct persian histories. thats why there isnt so much of it today. second he weakend the persian empire. this lead to many attacks from rome to the muslim invasion that beat persia. if persia stoped the arabs from invading then islam wouldnt be as big as it is today.

alexander blow to persia still follows through in the modern age

Canada ain't barren. Not by a long shot. The Mongol Empire owned much of Asia. It hadlots of land and MANY subjected peoples. It had all of China in its possesion. It had Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, some of Russia, made forays into Poland and the Holy Roman Empire, both Koreas were under its rule. Very few nations escaped. Japan though, did after two invasions were repulseed, the weather playing a huge role.

I know that, but the Mongol Empire is often famed for being one of the biggest empires in the world, when it actually had a ****load of empty land in Asia. The Roman Empire, by comparison, had over six times less land, but just slightly lower population. British Empire at its peak had just a little more land area, but over 5 times the population. It's far easier to expand into vast territories if they are uninhabited, that's what the majority of the Mongol Empire (covered 22% of the Earth's land) was; empty land.

Interesting fact about Alexander: Did you know the most powerful person (Alexander) in the world looked up to a homeless man? Read about Alexander and Diogenes of Sinope.
