"Bury my body, don't build my monument, keep my hand outside so the world knows who won the world had nothing in hand when died"

The person who conquered the whole world thought that life was ultimately worthless, why do you think your life wont be?

Life can be worth as much, or as little, to you as you want it to be.

He meant that you die with empty hands, and not necessarily that life is worthless.

It makes sense that he said that. Thats the kind of man he was. With everything he conquered he didn't believe in burning cities after over running them.

He even hunted down the 2 people that killed Darius III and killed them himself. He believed only Kings had the right to kill Kings.

*sigh* I'd respond but no doubt having belief in the scientific tangible real world and not the spirit world is probably modable. TC you also have to remember that Alexander was a pyschopathic egomanic, who believed he was a god and would regularly get drunk and murder his friends. I'm not sure I'd put too much stock in his wisdom.

The reason "people idolize Alexander" is because the influence of his accomplishments is still alive in the world today. The Greek influence in architecture, philosophy and numerous other fields, including science, mathmatics, government, etc, are beyond that of any other empire's in the Western world. The Roman achievement is the only one comparable, but the Greeks pre-date the Romans, and carried Greek influence in its own culture. The history of the Western civilized world, along with much of that in the East shy of China, began with Alexander's Greece. That's why Homer, Plato and Aristotle are still read today.

No. While Mesopatamia and Egypt had strong elements of early civilization, their impact was significantly limited in comparison to later Greece. This should not downplay their achievements, but their influence of modern culture and thought are not comparable to the Greeks, primarily in the Western world, but also in the East. The combination of previous influences in the East, such as Egypt and Persia, along with Greek influence helped later define the culture differences between Rome and Constantinople (today known as Istanbul). In conjunction with religious impacts, much of the world we see divided today can be traced back to some these influences.

He found that life was worthless because he wasted it conquering the world and really had nothing to show for it... not that he didn't spend it worshipping a God.

No, it's quite possible that after his bloody campaign he reached a dead end, his plans didn't work out at all, and hence he could have been really disappointed.

I am not a dualist and therefore do not believe heaven to be simply a spirit world but a physical place... That would be the Gnostics and Greek philosophers...

Indeed. It means he didn't die by being bested in combat.

Or, at least, that's MY interpretation :P
