As you can tell by my avatar, I'm a fan. I have most of the albums and the Unplugged DVD. Layne Staley is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing vocalists I've heard. So I pose this question to the OT readers...

Anybody else here an Alice in Chains fan?

i like 'em. i've got jar of flies and their self-titled albums, plus the unplugged dvd. layne had a really unique voice that's immediately recognizable, but jerry could do the job too. i stay away is a personal favorite, as are rooster and would.

Im a HUUUUUUUGE Alice in Chains fan, Im a big Layne Staley fan too, as he was and still is one of the most inspirational people in my life, and in my opinion, No one can sing a "heavy" song like he could, yet sing so beautiful for a soft acoustic song. and I saw them live back in August (with william duvall) was an amazing show. I wish Layne was there though.

As for my favorite songs its probably Nutshell, No Excuses, Man in the Box, Sludgefactory, I could go on forever really.

I'm not a fan, but Dirt and Alice in Chains (self-titled album) are good rock albums. I feel bad for the singer's demise. He didn't have a happy life.

It was his own fault he died though.

In some of his later interviews he deeply regretted using heroine, all the terrible stuff he had to go through later in his life. It's not that he wanted to be addicted to heroine, but he pretty much had to use it later on. There's some more info here if anybody's interested. But yeah, I guess he shouldn't have used it in the first place. One of my favorite bands ever though, so many amazing songs by such talented musicians :D

Yes, they're one of my favorite bands. I saw a bass cover of Nutshell on YouTube, which got me into the band and inspired me to play bass.

Great band. IMO more talented than Nirvana and Soundgarden, but Pearl Jam is probably in front of them on my list.

Be careful about what you read..There are 2 books out there by "author" Adriana Rubio on Layne's life. Unfortunately, they're full of BS. She claims to have interviewed him before he died, and in these he slams his former band members, saying "They are not my friends." I personally don't think he ever said anything to her..it doesn't seem believable if you know how close Layne and Jerry were... But that's just my thoughts.

Alice in Chains is one of the most talented bands of the 90's. Layne Staley had one of the best rock voices, its a shame he died.

Duvall isn't that bad. He's not Layne, but he's pretty good.

At the very least I don't things could go as bad for them as they did with Drowning Pool....

Even with a good replacement singer (They got this guy now) they still don't compare to their original album, Sinner, in which Dave Williams sang on. He ended up dying right after that album and the band just crashed and burned....

Seriously, compare for yourself:

Drowning Pool with Dave Williams

Drowning Pool with Ryan McCombs

Not I...I don't think they deserve to be called grunge... As far as I'm aware there are only three grunge bands: Nirvana, Soundgarden and Bush.

Without a doubt my favorite band. I agree that without Layne it is weird. On the other hand I have seen Jerry Cantrell in concert 3 times and the dude is freakin stellar! If you go through all of their library I bet Jerry wrote 1/2 if not more of the songs. That voice of Layne's is irreplaceable to say the least. R.I.P. Layne Staley
