Heard their new music on the radio. It's okay. Preferred the earlier music though TBH.

The new guy can definitely sing, but the new album was just... I don't know. I heard it on the radio and it just made me want to throw in one of my old AiC CDs.

I agree but, "check my brain" and "your decision" were pretty good.

New stuff is alright. The older stuff is just on another level to me though. Too many classics to name from the 90s when Layne was still with them.

I've heard some of the new stuff, and I think the only reason I'm even giving it a chance is because it has the AIC name on it.

I liked Alice in Chains' new CD, I don't care what anyone says, but it's not as good as their old stuff.

Just out of curiosity, how much of AIC's older lyrics and music were actually written by Staley? Because a lot of what I heard seemed to be coming from a deep place of depravity and misery, and the dude surely was a troubled man. So...how much of AIC's writing actually came from Staley?

Also, I noticed that you referred to Staley as "Layne". As if you actually knew him or something. Then in the very next sentence, you referred to the new singer as "DuVall" (as opposed to "William" or "Bill"). And, like, don't do that. When writing about artists or celebrities, please try not to refer to them by their first names, as if you're on a first-name-basis with them.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.

Anyway, if that's the case, then I'm really not interested in any new Alice in Chains. If Layne Staley really was the heart and sould of the music, then doing it with a new singer seems like it would just be trying to emulate old Alice in Chains' sound. And hell, if you're gonna do that, might as well get Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic back together, hire a singer who sounds like Kurt Cobain, and bring Nirvana back.

Actually, Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley shared the Lyrical duties for the group. However, it was Layne Staley that had the biggest impact on the groups CD "Dirt". The whole CD is about drugs, drug addiction and the perils associated with it. After that CD though Jerry Cantrell pretty much became the bands main song writer as Layne had more or less chosen Heroin over futhering his career with Alice in Chains.

As far as how I address the gentlemen...??? Who the heck cares!!! The point is that so many Alice In Chains fans seem to think that it is wrong for the group to go on without Layne Staley. He was an amazing singer and a force on stage, but he is gone...8 years now! Im pretty sure that if he were still alive but unable to tour or record for whatever reason, he would want the band to continue. I dont think a day goes by for Jerry Cantrell even now that when they tear into "Rooster" , "Would" or "Man in the Box" that he doesn't miss Layne! But you have to move on!! That goes for the fans as well!!!

Hey dude, that's just why I asked. I'm much more interested in the writing than I am in whether or not the new singer sounds like Staley.

If Jerry Cantrell is still with the band and was a major contributor to the songwriting on the band's older music, then I'll consider their new stuff to be worth checking out. Won't check it out any time soon since I'm broke, but that puts it on my list of things to check out eventually.

Basically, I was mostly saying that I cared more about Staley's contributions to WRITING songs than about his voice. You can replace a singer, drummer, or guitarist. But IMO, the heart and soul of this kind of music is in the writing. If Layne Staley was the prdominant writing influence, then I'm out since he's dead. If Jerry Cantrell was equally or more involved in the songwriting, then I'm still interested.

Actually Jerry Cantrell wrote 75% of the Alice in Chains songs.

On the third Alice in Chains studio album "Tripod" Layne Staley had his biggest lyrical contribution by writing all but 3 of the songs.

Jerry Cantrell wrote the hits "We Die Young" "Would?" "Rooster" "Down in a Hole" "Them Bones" "No Excuses" "Grind" "Heaven Beside You" and many more.

I grew up listening to AiC, so IMO, Layne can't be replaced. But William is doing an excellent job.

For me AIC of 92 to 94 can't be touched but Black Gives Way To Blue is better overall than Facelift and self titled to me. Only the lyrics don't stick out as much this time around.

IMO Black Gives Way To Blue is an awesome album, but absolutely NOTHING can top Facelift. We Die Young is one of my favourite songs.

Agreed. Most of the Unplugged albums were pretty good. Pearl Jam's and Nirvana's were excellent as well.

yeah i really liked nirvana's set list. the covers combined with the less popular songs made it pretty unique.

New Alice In Chains is okay, I prefer the old Alice In Chains. It's not the same without Layne. :(
