I was wondering what Off Topics opinion was of Staying up all night and then not sleeping the next day. I have class tomorrow, but I'm planning to stay up all night playing some games and getting some extra studying in before I have to go to class tomorrow. I have not had much time this year to have fun and the only way I find time is to not sleep. I'm a freshmen in College (Mechanical Engineering @ Colorado School of Mines). While most people here don't get much sleep just to get there work done what the point in sleeping. I don't like sleeping much. Maybe I just don't like my room mate, idk. You only live once.

I've done it, but only to get my sleeping schedule back on track. I could never go out the next day and function if I'm not constantly stimulated mentally to keep me awake. Downtime + me being tired = grumpypants.

I stay up all night and sleep all day. I usually go by which time BiankaDK starts showing up on the OT, by then its usually 6 AM and i hit the hay.

Its like using a more fun alarm clock

I did a few my freshman year (last year) and I found that being extremely drowsy and/or falling asleep in class the next day wasn't worth it. Imo you need at least 2 hours of sleep.

Sometimes but since I started working, it is necessary that I get enough sleep since I am constantly moving and standing. :)

I'm pulling an all nighter now. spent the night preparing my editorial that was deadlined yesterday. I consider it just punishment for my procrastination.

I'm in college now for computer science, and - especially with my programming work - I love it when I procrastinate and have to stay up all night to get it done. For some strange reason, I actually work better when I'm under that type of pressure.

I usally pull an all nighter every Friday night because I have to be up so early for work. I also do it sometimes during the holidays and whatnot. It can be fun to do, but messing up my sleeping pattern is a pain.

yeah I've done all nighters. It never really ends up well for me though. Personally I suggest you get sleep and take your console with you and hook it up to a tv at your school after class.

I do them a lot, especially around the end o' term time, but I would never chose to do one unless it was necessary, or to recalibrate my sleeping schedule.

I'll be doing one tonight. One term paper and two take-home exam essays due tomorrow. I probably just won't go to sleep and then go to bed early tomorrow night.

The Chemistry department at my university is notorious for destroying my sleep schedule. I have been staying up until five in the morning every day for the last week studying. ._.

In general, I try to get my full eight or nine hours of sleep. I perform much better when I am well-rested.

They always end up being a bad idea. Unless you have to pull one, don't do it. You'll feel the effects eventually.

But not one of those Twilight vampires, right? I mean, you'd be a cool zombie I hope. Like Dracula or Kurt Barlow (that awesome vampire from Salem's Lot), right?

Lol, I feel weak I had never pulled an all nighter me realize.

The worse I stayed up for was until 7 in the morning for project, school was @ 8, so I decided to just on the bed for a second.

Overslept... late lol. sneaking in an hour of sleep was worth it I guess lol. I envy your gift, your lack of desire to sleep.

Ah yes the uni all nighter. Been there and done that. Just make sure you get 3 hours of sleep before you tackle the next day. It really helps in my experience.

Unfortunately for me I wind up pulling all-nighters all the time (or at least they may as well be all-nighters when I only get 2-3 hours of sleep). It's not my choice, I just have a circadian rhythm that only makes me tired during daylight. I've been that way since I was a baby, and if left to my own devices I'll usually wind up going to sleep at 8-10 am and waking up at 6-8 pm (so it's a completely reversed cycle).

Normally I can survive like that in college since I try to pick classes that start at at least 11 am. However, this semester I got stuck with a schedule that has me usually waking up at 8:00 am and the latest I can wake up is 9:00 am and that's only on two days. Considering that I usually get to sleep at around 5-6 am these days...yeah, I have been hating life this semester. Monday isn't so bad since I'm still rested from the weekend, but by Friday I'm damn near close to having a psychotic meltdown. And getting up in the mornings sucks since not only do I feel like someone just hit me with a full dose of anesthetic but also because for the first 15 minutes or so my brain is still shut down so I wind up with extremely bizarre thought patterns, poor motor coordination, and the feeling that I'm still dreaming (actually I think that one carries on for like half the day).

Anyway, my advice as an insomniac and neuroscience major: Get some sleep damnit. It helps keep your cognitive capacities at a decent level of performance and research has shown that sleep is when your brain solidifies any knowledge it has learned since the last time it slept. Hence why all night cram sessions are a bad idea: You don't remember much of what you crammed.

I've pulled a true one nighter (from sunrise all the way to sunset of the next day) once in my entire life. I got a lot more done in that 36 hour period than I thought I would, and the sleep afterwards was the best I've had in my life. I wouldn't recommend it if you are a busy person or have to be fully focused doing whatever it is you do during the daytime.

I've stayed up all night after insomnia, sucks the next day. Also after I've been partying....nothing worse than feeling a hangover coming on whilst you're still awake : [

Rarely do I pull an all-nighter. In fact, I've only pulled one twice and neither was while I was in college, surprisingly.

staying up for over 24hrs at a time is only fun if you are with friends. You get really stupid acting after a while.
