This is not another religion thread (sort of) :D But anyways, heres the deal. I don't go to church, or read the bible, and I believe in evolution and not creationism. BUT, I don't flat out say "God isn't real", even though I haven't been given solid evidence he exists, I still kind of believe there is a God and a place we go to when we die (Heaven). Use the poll, but also explain.

Do you believe in a sort of natural spirit rather than an actual God? Anyways sounds like you're agnostic and open to the idea of religion, just not entirely convinced by it.

You kind of sound like a deist. They believe that God exists and created the universe, but stopped there. There is no 'holy trinity' or 'prayer,' or 'spirit of Jesus,' just the rest of the universe, and for some people, heaven.

You should be proud. Many famous people were deists (Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, etc.)

I myself am an agnostic (which means I'm a bit more skeptical of God's existence than you), but I don't flat-out reject it. I like to keep an open mind.

I'd label you as an agnostic theist; you're not sure about the universe around you, but you assume that there is some sort of divine force babysitting the universe, etc.

Super_mario_128 and pirate700 are right. the definition of you would be Agnostic. You believe in something, but you do not define it or have decided that it is anything specific.

No. The description of yourself fits with some Hindus. Apparently, Hinduism is accepting of science but I haven't researched it enough to confirm that. You're only an atheist if you deny the existance of all deities.

Yeah, but I choose not to devote my life to said God.

They key component to atheism is thinking that God does not exist.

Also, despite the comments of one or two others, you are not an agnostic, which is someone who personally believes that God does not exist, but recognizes the potential for God to exist (whereas an atheist thinks that God cannot exist), but thinks it impossible to prove or disprove God's existence.

EDIT: Apologies-what I described was agnostic atheism.

Belief in God and adherence to a specific religion are two entirely separate things. If you believe in God, then you are not atheist.

First time I'm posting in a religious thread. I suck.

I'm a "christian" but I believe more in santa then in god. Seen so much stuff that proves there is no god, can't even believe in god if I wanted to. Not saying I'm experianced in life or anything. Why would our god be the right one? Egyptians or Africans didin't know anything about our god way back. Then suddenly someone decided to make this shait up and force people to believe in it. Religions are just not needed anymore. I hope they'll die out...

Hot-Tamale

Lincoln was a Christian (most likely Baptist).

In any case, a lot of famous people are Scientologists. It's not a good idea to base the validity/"awesomeness" of your beliefs on who else believed it.

youre certainly not an atheist. anyway, try this quiz. its not 100% accurate, but it should give you a pretty good idea of what you might identify yourself as. personally, i dont put much weight into groupings. the important thing is what you believe, not what other people might categorize it as. but if that is what you want then the quiz might help.

an agnostic ... is someone who personally believes that God does not exist, but recognizes the potential for God to exist (whereas an atheist thinks that God cannot exist), but thinks it impossible to prove or disprove God's existence.

chessmaster1989

No, that isn't true. A pure agnostic is someone who simply believes that it is impossible to attain any level of certain knowledge with respect to whether or not God exists. You can have both agnostic atheists and agnostic theists; the only criteria for agnosticism is the maintenance of the position that certain knowledge with respect to God's existence is impossible.

No, what I described was an agnostic atheist. Apparently, upon further research, I discovered that agnostics can be either atheists or theists. From my experience, though, they tend to be atheists.

There shouldn't really be a label for not believing in God, seeing as you don't have a reason to believe most things you can't make a label for someone who doesn't believe in Santa or Scientology.

Well what you are categorized as is determined specifically by what you believe and know about God, not what you believe and know about the afterlife or the origin of species nor what you do on a sunday. So you don't say that "God isn't real" which means that you are not a strong atheist. You say that you do believe there is a God which means that you are not a weak atheist and that you are a theist (or perhaps a deist if the God you believe in is impersonal). Presuming that you don't claim to know that your belief is correct I would call you an agnostic theist.

I know. But what created the elements for life in the first place? As an agnostic, I don't think it was any sort of 'god,' but many people (including deists) think that a god created the universe and let nature take its course.

Deist.

Deism has nothing to do with how you worship God, but how God interacts with the universe. You could believe God is the homeless guy down the street and not worship him, but that doesn't make you a deist.

Yup

Also, despite the comments of one or two others, you are not an agnostic, which is someone who personally believes that God does not exist, but recognizes the potential for God to exist (whereas an atheist thinks that God cannot exist), but thinks it impossible to prove or disprove God's existence.

chessmaster1989

Not quite. agnosticism refers to what people know not what they believe, you've gotta seperate the two.

----------------Believes in God-- Doesn't believe in God -Believes that there is no God

I know: -------gnostic theist ----gnostic weak atheist ----gnostic strong atheist

I don't know: -agnostic theist ---agnostic weak atheist ---agnostic strong atheist

A gnostic weak atheist is redundant. "I know I don't believe in God" is the same thing as "I don't believe in God." All weak atheists are agnostic.

I don't. That's why I took the test in the first place.

then it would be odd to critique the quizz's results if you aknowledge your own confusion.

I said I don't know what I am. I know well enough what I'm not to criticise specific results to a test.

to know what youre not is to know something about yourself.

Yup

Also, despite the comments of one or two others, you are not an agnostic, which is someone who personally believes that God does not exist, but recognizes the potential for God to exist (whereas an atheist thinks that God cannot exist), but thinks it impossible to prove or disprove God's existence.

Not quite. agnosticism refers to what people know not what they believe, you've gotta seperate the two.

----------------Believes in God-- Doesn't believe in God -Believes that there is no God

I know: -------gnostic theist ----gnostic weak atheist ----gnostic strong atheist

I don't know: -agnostic theist ---agnostic weak atheist ---agnostic strong atheist

I don't think that you can really have a "gnostic weak atheist". Weak atheism is simply the stance that the current evidence in favor of God is unconvincing; there's nothing that you can really feel either certain or uncertain about.
