I switched my major from Network Engineering to Art at a communnity college, to later transfer to an in-state university and major in Art and Design. I decided to "pursue my passion" and work hard in this field. The major isn't totally useless like a Fine Arts degree or philosophy degree, based from the program courses and descriptions at least; I'd be working with graphic design, 3D animation, and even a little bit of web design, among other things.

There are people who consider it lazy to not pursure IT and CS and Mathematics and say it's the reason why tech jobs are being outsourced more and more. What do you all think, not only for my decesion, but with the whole "there are too many American students who pursue non-sense degrees instead of IT and math, etc."

People are going to call you dumb. I'm studying business and sound engineering.. and it appears I'm going to get better paying jobs in my art field.. lol. As long as you work hard, and try.. You will be fine. Graphic Design is a great field.

So you're an artist too? Did you just practice on your own, while going to school for business and sound engineering?

Network Engineering is a great field to be in and really is the only job in IT that most likely won't be outsourced all together. Its the deskside positions that are getting outsourced. Companies will always, always need a network admin/engineer. As far as going in the design/art field, that is a great field to get into, you have many options I would think. You could into Marketing, games, movies, basically the whole entertainment field is there for you. You have to do what will make you happy, but of course it has to be feasible. Sure we all want to be superstars in whatever we do, but have to think realistically. Another thing is location, if you can find a lot of jobs in your area that focus on the design aspect, then go for it.

Go with your passion, but if you have problems getting a good paying job dont ask why. I can't tell you how many friends I have that got degrees that are completely useless. You should also ask yourself if the career path you are pursuing is worth getting a student loan debt for. Sometimes its better to self research, and grind your way to the top and avoid the extra expense

You'll feel foolish at the end of this life if you realize you didn't do what you want because of how other people thought you should live.

Art degrees are a funny thing. If you're talented and have a great portfolio the degree will help you grow as an artist. If you don't then a degree is practically worthless.

Do want you find interesting and fun, not what brings the most money or what scoiety tells you is the right choice.  People laugh at, say, philosphy and psychology majors....yet my cousin is both of those and wrote some books and published them before leaving college and now works at a children's hospital and still writes.

It really depends how much you love your field. I you have a passion, and you work hard... you will be fine.. You're going to be happier than being stuck in a job that pays slightly more but is miserable.

Assuming, of course, that one will get into said field.
