Hey random question for Americans on this board. Since your currently in the midst of the 150 anniversary of the Civil War, are you / have you been in volved in an re-enactments much? I study history and have always enjoyed reading Civil War literature and biographies on the leading figures. I still plan to go see some Civil War re-enactments at some point. Went down to Gettysburg a few years ago it was real cool, with the 150th this year I'm sure it will be amazing.

So yeah have you been out to any Civil War related events in the past few years? If not what is your perception on them? (I know its weird, but I always find it neat to see the how opinions differ between northerners and southerners).

Edit: celebrations was a poor choice of words, re-enactment was more what I was getting at. Though I thought the Gettysburg address (150th this year) and emancipation proclamation were things that were celebrated

Heard of memorials and battle re-enactments, but never a celebration. At most, I will read a another book on the American Civil War, or its key players. A recent biography of Seward has been released and caught my eye.

Nobody in their right mind is supportive of war and deaths. With war however came the basic structures for what we have today (and rights we used to have). Now that they are trying to take everyones rights away we will be heading to civil war number 2. Many have fought to protect freedom, now we live where the young are intended to give it away because we are "modern" and things have "changed" now. Sorry people, things have not changed.

Black people should celebrate it if you think about. I wonder why they dont, its when they got freed (for the most part), seems like a logical reason to make it a holiday.

Then emancipation should be celebrated, not the Civil War itself. Plus it's not like all troubles for black people went away after the Civil War

Never celebrated it or seen a reenactment. As for my opinion on them? What George Carlin said to reenactment actors, "Use live ammunition next time, will you assholes!"

I'd like to go see the Battle of Olustee reenactment one of these years. It's not one of those famous, real talked about battles. But still interesting.

It's not an argument. Look around the USA and see whats actually happening. You will be amazed to find that there are huge numbers of people who are ready to take up arms and stop tyranny across the nation if the time calls for it. This entire country is divided, we will be fighting amongst ourselves.

Maybe it's just me, but I doubt that the citizens of a once divided nation would celebrate the time that they were divided.

However, we'll probably end up within another civil war very shortly with the way this country is going.

Oh, I agree with you are far as OT goes. I used the word "young" for a reason. A lot of the members are very young and or students. The educational insitutions show a great lack of critical thinking skills. Little details of importance of United States history is actually presented anymore that was taught not so long ago.

By "modern" I am reffering to a state of mind. So many folks today see things a new and modern while things "old" are considered outdated and "untrue". I simply think this is a ignorant and completely foolish notion. Truth and wisdom does not belong to one generation or another it belongs to all times. Just because we have computers and iphones and more advanced communication systems shows we are somehow "different" from those before us. History repeats itself and it will again time after time.

We are just as divided today because we lack the simple importance of the word "freedom". This country is getting more and more unfree year after year. The reason #2 civil war will most certainly happen is because we are on the trail of no return. The debt is actually higher than what can actually be paid.

It was never 'celebrated.'  Reinacting the battles at places like Gettysburg (which I've seen) are done for interest in history and as a memorial.

There were a few re-enactments done by a professor and some of the students at my college a few years ago (or at least one, I think there were others).

It made them no longer legal property, but I'm not sure that it really gave them all that much freedom.

They wouldn't celebrate the war, maybe the day they were emancipated, but they would probably be more likely to celebrate when the civil rights act was signed

I like how this is almost a complete non-sequitur.
