The first season was really good. I've watch a few of the more resent episodes and it's like they aren't even trying to be funny. Kind of like the Simpsons post season 10.
I like both American Dad and Family Guy. To be fair, I think Robot Chicken is where Family Guy jokes go to die. I don't think I've even cracked a smile at that show.
Eh, I guess it's more "sophisticated" than Family Guy. It's really just more of Seth McFarlane trying to have more "intelligent" humor, I guess. The Cleveland Show matches your description more, that show is just his failure of appealing to a black audience.
I think it's much better than Family Guy (which isn't saying much at this point). American Dad isn't a fantastic show or something, but it benefits from actually having a story in each episode and jokes that don't rely on old pop culture references/flashbacks al the time.

I agree with konekomaru Robot Chicken isn't any good.

American Dad>Family Guy in every possible way. The writing is much better and doesn't rely on shock or blatantly offensive content (even though both happen from time to time)
