American patriotism

Hi I'm British I havn't visited the US but it is my understanding that you Yanks are pretty patriotic, probably one of the most patriotic nations on the planet.

Where can the U.S flag typicaly be found flying? Do all government buildings fly it?

In US movies that feature high schools, there is pretty much allways a 'Star spangled Banner' sitting in the corner of the room and there is allways one in a principles's office! Is it the same in your school or is this just a movie thing?

I thought that the Brits were pretty proud of their country but you'll be hard pressed to find any Union Jacks in any other place than the centre of London.

i'll give a shot at an answer for ya, since i'm in the states.

yes, all gov't buildings have the US flag, and usually the state flag flying below it. and yes, the SSB is in a lot of schools and such, along with stuff like "America the Beautiful"

however, i think americans are less patriotic than we come off as, because the most patriotic ones will always speak the loudest *figuratively* while the others may not even care. similarly to product reviews; the people who have a problem will quickly voice thier opinion, whereas people who are content/satisfied with it may not. (this example is backwards, i konw)

oh idunno about that. We may be the most outwardly patriotic, we sure love to show and sing about it lol, but I feel most countries have a good amount of patriots.

The schools I attended have had flags outside. In elementary school (grades k-5), we had little flags in our cl@ss and we sang the pledge of allegience every morning, but it stopped after that.

Nationalism is bad, and, excluding the folks on FOX News, you won't find many nationalists in America.

Very interesting, thanks. The British flag the 'Union Flag or the 'Union Jack' is no where near as common. The only government buildings that fly at are in Whitehall in central London. The Union flag flies from Parliment and from Buckingham palace (but only when the Monarch is in residence).

Even the British SIS buildings don't fly the flag. These buildings being the headquarters of MI5 and MI6.

So Americans do like to 'show the flag' then. Thats pretty damn patriotic.

Neo-imperialism is the social or economic dominance of another nation or culture. We have been doing that since our inception.

Altogether nationalism is something perculiar.

You will often find it strongest and most violent where there is the lowest degree of culture.

Since your government building question was answered, I'll address one of your other points. I don't know very many patriotic people, but I myself am (I think I get it from my dad though, who knows). What's misunderstood a lot of the time is that not being satisfied with you're country isn't anti-patriotic, it's simply wanting your country to be better than it already is (which is very patriotic, to me). In my own opinion, I'm patriotic because I absolutely love living in this country, I want to put my efforts into making it a better, safer place to live, and I appreciate the fact of how well we have it here, how LUCKY I was to be born in a place where I can pursue my own life. I disagree. If you mean socio-economic dominance, that is a mere by-product of globalization, which is inevitable. You could say that China is "semi" imperialistic, have a good share of the US market for its goods, however, that would be an inaccurate use of the word itself. Imperialism really came to a close after the US willingly let go of the Philipinness in 1948 (im not entirely sure of the exact year). Otherwise, the US has been a minimal imperialistic power, certainly a force in many latina american countries via economic cooercion, but otherwise, not truely an "imperialist." Now, if you talked about any other country, such as France, where an attempt to retain colonies lasted well into the 1950s, then you have something. THe US no doubt has economic hegmony over several countries, and has tried, with Iran and Dominican Republic, to use Economic cooercion for intended effects, however, as an imperialist, the US stopped expanding in 1902 and ended its imperialist period in 1948

Exactly. There are multiple forms of imperialization, whether it is militaristic, economic, social, etc. We are a country with massive resources and coercion capability, and have the ability to force other countries to do our bidding in many ways.

It might be because I live in Nebraska, people around here don't have much to be proud of ever since Osborne left the Huskers.
