At first I thought this dude was slightly off http://www.hamsterfist.com/way-of-the-fist/2009/9/21/an-attack-on-gaming.html until I read this comment about the story at Reddit. " http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/9ml8b/an_attack_on_gaming/

I think the idea that people spent more time doing "real things" prior to video games is incorrect. Prior to video games, lots of people in that same age demographic spent their free time watching television instead of doing something "real," prior to that it was radio, and so on and so on. The fact is, a large percentage of people are completely content with spending their free time doing nothing particularly productive. There isn't anything wrong with that, and it's nothing new. "

So I guess this poster has not concept of history, or what people did before the last 50 years. Has he ever heard of books? Hamsterfist is right. There is plenty to be scared about.

No person should say to another person how to spend his or her time.

I agree with this. I'm an extreme gamer, but I do other things in my time as well. :|

Such as talking on the internet with people.

So books are "more real"? If people weren't busy pwning n00bs in Halo or whatever, they'd be sitting in an overstuffed chair, sipping cognac with their brow furrowed over a passage by Sartre? Hmm...

Espically when they take the time the time to do so in an article for no good reason what so ever. Am I right? Oh wait a minute, that would be a bit ironic...

Because it has nothing whatsoever with what is being discussed. Of course, since this account was apparently created specifically to make this post, I assume it is someone's "funny marijuana activist" alt account

Even if it was, nobody in this thread mentioned marijuana, so how on Earth did you come to the conclusion that we "stick up our noses" at people who smoke it?

He's saying that gamers stick their nose up about people who smoke weed, which is hilariously ironic, but whatever. He then goes on to suggest that gaming is as bad a habit as smoking. Well he dosn't outright state that, but for his post to make sense the suggestion is in the text.

Yet he's providing no evidence for the claim that "gamers" stick up their nose at weed smokers. I'm assuming this is a joke. If not, I will proceed to plant my face on my desk.

I often wonder why people think procrastination didn't exist before video games.

The only thing worse than when someone attacks another person for what they have the right to do is someone who generalizes. :x Don't assume that the majority of people on this board follow those debates or follow the opinions of those in them.

To clear up any ambiguity, I was saying his own comment was ironic, not that of gamers. It's not uncommon for gamers to smoke weed, though not even the majority do. Also this community is largely in favour of weed legalisation, unless they banned those users since I last checked .

I do play a lot of video games; but I went to the Public Library today and brought home 4 books. 1 - 3 books a week is a good average for me.

I will admit, that less gaming and more excersise would be a good thing.

I hope that guy knows I have a billion times more fun playing video games than reading books and playing sports. I want to enjoy my past-time, not waste it on skills I won't ever use later on in life.

I disagree with all three. I think if a person could have a job versus not having a job, it is in the best interest of the person and everyone around him if he has a job. I also think it is in the best interest of the person to not allow him to get high on spray paint during his free time either. My point: There are cases when it's perfectly fine to criticize people's uses of their free time. When they're being lazy, for example.

I've always thought if you enjoy what you are doing, whether it's productive or not, then it's not a waste of time IMO.
