So, three mobile operating systems, which ones do you prefer?

Is it the incredibly streamlined and intuitive iOS?

Is it the slightly more complicated but more open and full featured Android?

Or is it Microsft's unique take on a smartphone OS with Windows Phone 7, that has a rather unique lack of focus on apps?

Which one's your favorite? And why?

iOS > Android

Both are incredibly similar in terms of functionality but I prefer iOS. It is smoother, more responsive and much more intuitive. It never lags or crashes and its performance is unified since it runs on specific devices. Android on the top spec Android phone is good, but its awful on the mid range products.

The Android market is too fragmented and as a result its an unreliable format. Every Android phone I've used with few exceptions (the top spec ones) are sluggish and unresponsive. The top spec ones are comparable to iOS but they still lack the smoothness.

Hardware wise the iPhone is what propels iOS ahead. The iPhone touch screen is still the best and creates the best user experience, and the Retina Displays blows all the others out of the water. iPhone battery life is still miles ahead of Android phones too. The App Store is still the best place to get apps as well.

Conclusion - Both are good but iOS is still on top.

I left out WP7 since I have not used it yet.

droid is the clear winner here for me...but when are companies gonna start utilizing wats there for them...flag ship htc from verizon...dual core nvidia tegra 2....still running froyo...we have gingerbread...use it...it would make better use of the tegra 2 and even with the performance gains that gingerbread has...can u imagine havin 2x the power with it??? i mean seriously droid 3 has been out for a good while now...and droid 4 is releasing soon...why are all the big name companies still releasing new phones with froyo?????

Android is by far the best. Apple with iOS, while it is very secure and looks nice, have attempted to simplify it way to much. They sacrifice some functionality and customization for ease of use. Android on the other hand offers a perfect balance. It's not difficult at all to use but provides a variety of different things you can do on top of what iOS offers. Not only that but with Android I have a variety of devices to choose from. With iOS I can choose one outdated piece of hardware.

Are they really that bad? I love my droid, but I was thinking getting an Iphone because I like my music on an Apple product (they play better IMO.)

And since it came to Verizon and I only have half a year.....:P

I really just don't like them and don't think they stack up. Everyone I know that has, even the current iPhone, can't wait for their contract to be up. In typical apple style, they are all flash and no quality substance.

The Iphone is a good music player, but I've come to like the player pro and poweramp apps on my android a little better, theyr'e more feature rich.

From my experience with Android, I would say it's probably the worst. It's a cellphone, I don't want to spend all that time organizing and reorganizing things just like I do for windows, it's not practical and it takes up all of my time. Of course you don't need to organize it and customize it, but you do if you want it to be efficient and nice-looking. The icons are small and don't fit to the edges of the screen which is flat out stupid. iOS is more streamlined and looks nicer. Windows Phone 7 has an even better interface because you see all of the important information right there. Despite this though, I am still getting an Android phone because the phone itself is very good and on sale, and Android is still good.

having owned both i like iOS more.

I owned a samsung captivate and after putting apps and videos and stuff the phone ran REALLY SLOWLY and constantly kept crashing. As well iPhone's battery life was miles better than androids, could go a full week without charging or 10 days if i didn't use the phone heavily, as well the app store> android market

never had windows phone 7 but i prefer my android over the ios in my ipod touch

im not big on apps, but android apps are pretty open, more open than the ones i see on iphone (btw, are google apps on ios? i never checked but those are the best apps imo)

however, putting videos is easier on ios because of how simple the sync and itunes are... i still prefer iphones/ ipods for music and video playback because of the simplicity, but i feel like i can do so much more with my android... including some "questionable" apps that are actually found in the android market :P

The problem was the Samsung phone, not android. I had the same phone with the same problems of it crashing and being buggy. My Atrix gets better battery life than my iphone did...

Yep, Google puts most of its apps on the App Store as well, except for some notable exceptions like Google Docs, which is only on Android.

ive alway prefered iOS. im no apple fanboy, my iphone 3GS is the only apple product i've ever owned and i find it to be fantastic. im due to upgrade around september time and would be quite happy to try a Andriod. my friend has a nexus and i quite like the look of it. but it just doesn't looks as clean and polished as iOS and the apps store on iOS is way better.

i keep hearing people say that Andriod is more open than the restrictive iOS. but other than customisation nobody has ever been able to give me good reason why this is needed on a phone... im guessing its maybe due to topics that can't be discused on this forum.

im not one of these weirdo's that have drawn a line in the sand and fight there chosen OS's corner like a mentally ill pitbull. i just want the best phone i can get. the only dislike i have is for samsung, god i hate samsung.

Had an opportunity to try Android for a while before I tried iOS, and for me iOS is much better. Visually appealing, lightening speeds, great ease of use, and a better application market.

Imagine if Microsoft blocked you from using certain programs on your PC?

That's what iOS is doing. I don't like the idea of another big corporation in addition to your phone corporation, perpetuating their beliefs on to you. They feel they don't like a certain app or it doesn't match their moral standards, they block it. You think they'll ever let Mozilla make a Flash-enabled Firefox app?

Android may be run by Google, but it's far more open-ended.

I've had a Motorola Droid for a while and I love it. I've used an Iphone before, but I find it to streamlined. Sure Android has a lot of crap apps, but i like how custom it feels. I might get the Droid 3 soon, but it's pretty expensive. I haven't used Windows phone 7 yet, but I've heard good things. I was looking at the HTC Trophy for a while, but I read somewhere that Windows mobile 7 lacks some key features that Android has.

What phone do you have? I have the HTC Legend and I managed to update to 2.2 but I find that sometimes, it starts lagging if too many things are running, but overall a nice improvement.

Anything dude. If I don't like something that comes prepackaged, I can change it. Alternative music player? yes. Alternative, web browser? yes. Alternative texting and phone applications? yes. Sick of the way your home screen looks? It can be drastically changed, unlike the iphone where I'm stuck with what I'm given, and apple hasn't changed the look of the os since the original was released, isn't anyone sick of looking at the big block wall of icons yet? Also, I have an option to choose the manufacture and style handset to use, ios is glued to one single piece of hardware. If you don't like that hardware, oh well, if you want ios, that's the only option. Plus I'm not strapped to itunes which comes bloated with quicktime.

Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. Ever since the start I think there has been something wrong with the hardware (don't know what, and I've been trying to troubleshoot it myself)... so I know its not Android that is causing the problems. A friend of mine got the Nexus S with Gingerbread... and I'm jealous. Also, my girlfriend is getting a new phone at the end of this year, and will probably have access to all the top-of-the-line hardware (since she is switching providers). And here I am getting errors trying to upgrade just to Froyo on single-core hardware. :(

so it sounds like people are exaggerating the difference then. nothing there screams way better like i see in some posts. Vinegar_Strokes

Some people feel "control" is something that could be considered "way better." It is the difference between something like PC and console gaming. The former gives you complete control and requires effort to make it work how you want. The latter "just works" but doesn't offer greater possibilities.

Had I been stuck with the stock browser on my phone and not been able to use Opera... I would have given up on even trying to use the internet on my phone. Now I spend almost more time using the internet on my phone than on a computer.

It's a matter of opinion, like anything else. If you like corporations to tell you what you want and like then go iphone, otherwise android. Reminds me of when Steve Jobs told people they were holding their phones wrong instead of admitting there was a problem with his beloved iphone antenna...

[QUOTE="Vinegar_Strokes"]so it sounds like people are exaggerating the difference then. nothing there screams way better like i see in some posts. Vinegar_Strokes

It's a matter of opinion, like anything else. If you like corporations to tell you what you want and like then go iphone, otherwise android. Reminds me of when Steve Jobs told people they were holding their phones wrong instead of admitting there was a problem with his beloved iphone antenna...

so corporations are currently telling me what i have to buy for my iphone. i was not aware of this. i though my choice of app from the 100,000's was my free will. how does this work on the android then.

What:? When you purchase an Iphone, your accepting the fact that Apple doesn't give the customer what it wants, it gives them what it thinks they should have or not have And is more importantly out to protect their pocket book. The only reason the app store even exists today is because Apple was protecting their empire from, people who wanted more features and flexebility with their apple devices.

iOS wins, not because it's better - but because it's got a bigger app selection.

Honestly, all three phone OSes do pretty much exactly the same thing.

It's purely a matter of personal taste vs. app support vs. hardware features.

Seriously Apps?

The only edge iOS has in apps is that it's been on the market first and longer but just about every analyst is expecting the Android market to eclipse due to it's faster growing rate of builds and publication. With that said, 90% of apps on both platforms are complete garbage as well every major popular app is available on both. So really using the app store as a basis for decision is kind of weak. Not to mention Google doesn't place those strict rules and fees on app development like Apple does.

It really comes down to marketing + styIe + popularity. They're so many android phones that it's easier for people to pick out an iPhone because its a safe and easy purchase. Not many are willing to put in the research for the best android phone and they know they'll get a quality product with iPhone by default.

Android simply because of iTunes. Also, flash player and Google not restricting the types of apps you can install.

Oh! Isn't that the one that came out last summer?

To be honest I'm not really a fan of Samsung after my last phone (the Samsung Double Flip) - but the Galaxy S Captivate looked nice.

I'm looking forward to Windows Phone 7's Mango update, that and Microsoft is really pushing unique features for WP7 to make it stand out from the others. Not to mention Micosoft usually provides awesome development tools. Where the iPhone wins is in consistency, but it loses because it's closed. Android does well because it's open, but because it's so open, it lacks consistency device to device. WP7 is somewhere in the middle.

The Nexus S is also a beauty. Went from a 3GS to this and will never go back. Plus the camera and screen on this thing is amazing, better than anything that's come out for iphone (and yes, to me it's better than retina, also made by sammy)
