Death Note, Escaflowne, Blood+ and Eureka7. Maybe the Persona4 Anime will also suite your taste, but it's not out yet.

Index I thought was good, but not that great. Index herself got kind of annoying and had no real relevance beyond the first arc, and in all honest I liked the four main characters of Railgun (Misaka especially, hence a big part of why I liked Railgun more) more than the main characters of Index. I thought the first arc (the first 12-ish episodes) of Railgun was much better than any arc in Index. Admittedly the rest of the series after that wasn't as good, but I'd say on the whole I enjoyed the remaining episodes more than the equivalent portions of Index.

Haven't watched Index II yet, will at some point though. Wish there were a second season of Railgun.

Also, is that Canaan in your avy? If so, that anime's awesome.

I'd agree with the people who said Trigun and Deathnote. Deathnote is very well written and the characers feel very real and developed. There's a little romance but it's not really the main focus of the show, rather a significant plot point that is tastefully done.Trigun is also well written and has a lot of the gunplay you're looking for. There's a lot of shooting but the main character refuses to kill. There is also a romantic subplot in it but I'm not sure as to the extent of the subplot due to not watching the whole series and not having watched any episodes in a while.

Id have to say watch the Law of Ueki , great show

I can't personally vouch for it because I have no real interest in watching the show, but from what I've heard it's supposed to be a very good romance anime.

But, I haven't watched it and do not plan to watch it, so I'm afraid I can't be of more help than that.

For a romantic comedy, School Rumble, somehow it uses humour to present a odd feeling that makes you wonder whether you should be laughing or crying.

As for a anime that has scenes classed as epic (like many Death Note cliffhangers), Steins;Gate, which is ongoing and possibly the best anime I've seen, other than possibly Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, however, the novels are far superior in Umineko's case; not sure about Steins;Gate books.

If you want guns, violence, blood, gore and badass, go for Hellsing, you won't have to wait a year or two for the next episode like all the other watchers, which is always good.

If you still want guns but you're not into the blood and gore kind of thing, then go for Ao no Exorcist AKA Blue Exorcist.

And also watch the 'No Naku Koro ni' series because it's amazing.
