Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu is worth watching, it's funny. Well, if you like that type of random humor anyway. I'd also recommend GTO, a classic IMO.

I'd say give Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop a go, probably two of the best animes of the 90's there imo. But for something more recent how about the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? Plus its got its 'second season' running now in Japan too which adds some much needed length to the series.

Clannad and its sequel Air TV Kanon 2006 Pretty much anything by Key :PCoolSkAGuy

Clannad is amazing. I like it better than Kanon.

Hellsing anime + OVAs-great vampire anime.

Vandread-Space and mech with action and comedy.

Gun X Sword- Personal favorite mech anime.

Romeo X Juliet- Has action, love, and some comedy. Favorite telling of story.

Trinity Blood- Futuristic vampire anime and my favorite adult swim anime.

I've just started watching Clannad (just finished watching episode 8 a few minutes ago) and I have to say that it's pretty good thus far. I'm somewhat disappointed though with the direction it seems to have taken since the first few episodes though where I thought it was going to be one of those moe anime where every character has serious life problems that need sorting out. Granted it is like that for the most part, so I guess I'm just annoyed at what appears to have been a massive missed opportunity with a couple of the characters. But I'd still recommend it nonetheless. From what I hear Kanon is also pretty good whereas Clannad After Story is rather mediocre.

As for other anime worth watching:

- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (comedy with a rather bizarre plot twist in the middle or at the end of the series depending on which order you view the episodes...yes, there are actually two different ways that the episodes can be ordered in this series)

- Elfen Lied (just watch it. If you have a strong enough stomach to make it past the first five minutes you'll love it)

- Akira (if you haven't seen this yet you need to)

- GTO (school comedy, basically about an ex-bike gang leader who becomes a teacher)

- Paranoia Agent (it's a love it or hate it anime. If you like anime that make you think, you'll like PA. If you hate anime that lack action and are all talk, you'll hate PA)

- Cowboy Beebop (also a must watch if you haven't seen it)

- Blue Gender (mecha anime. takes place on an Earth where humanity has almost been completely eradicated by giant bug monsters)

- Neon Genesis Evangelion (another must watch)

- Excel Saga (a very random comedy. There's honestly no way to describe what this anime is about)

- Ranma 1/2 (martial arts comedy about a boy who turns into a girl if hit with cold water. There are other characters with a similar curse, including his father who turns into a panda and his rival who turns into a piglet. It's well worth watching)

Afro Samurai is a good anime, Code Geass is great up until the end of the second season, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is my personal favorite.

EDIT: And of course Neon Genises Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are practically obligatory for anime fans if you havent seen those yet :P

Oh yes, Elfen Lied is brutal, it has heavy gore to say the least. Theres also a fair amount of nudity in it. There are also a few scenes that depict very mature content, i wont say what those are so as not to spoil it for anyone, but...it might disturb you quiet a bit. I found it hard to watch a few scenes...very hard actually, and im not usually one to have a queasy stomach, or be faint of heart.

Haha not quiet. The story that it has to tell is actually quiet brillant, its just not for the faint of heart, and can be both heart wrenching and gut wrenching. (i edited my other post btw, explained it a little more)

And yes, there is a ton of gore. We're talking heavy doses of disembowlment, dismembering, and decapitation here, all of which are accompanied with a very liberal amount of blood. While most of that is contained to the first episode, the anime only slows down because it quickly finds new ways to disturb you.

Don't let that turn you off though. It's a very well made anime with a very good story. Most people put it in the top 5 anime they've seen and for good reason.

I know that The Foreign Guy has a union, Hinamizawa, that's pretty much all about anime. I don't know how active it is though.
