What do you say to those people who just want to correct you on everything? Not correcting you on the way you speak, but on the things you say. I have a friend who is always correcting me and laughing at some of the things I say because it is wrong! It gets so annoying! Sometimes, I think he tries to make me feel stupid! He needs to loosen up a little bit. What should I do? Should I just ignore him or tell him off? By the way, he is a good friend.

Why not just say things correctly...then he won't be able to correct you.:|

Sounds like  a solid plan. I correct my freinds when they sonmething stupid, not to be mean or uptight, but so they dont sound dumb. I expect them to do the same when I say something dumb.

There's a big difference between picking on little details and correcting completely misinformed viewpoints.  I agree with those in this thread who suggest the OP ought to stop saying things that need to be corrected.  That would fix the problem immediately.

Like, version 1.8 on the ps3 is supposed to upscale dvd's right? Well, yesterday, I put a dvd in my ps3 and I forgot to set the dvd upscaler. My friend happened to be sitting right there and he said "you don't need the dvd upscaler. It's not going to make them into hd." And then I said, "I think it does make the dvd's in hd." And then he starts getting all deep into it to prove that I'm wrong. THAT is aggravating!! Help Me out!!

Wll, I guess you should just tell him how you feel. He isn't going to stop unless he knows you're annoyed by it.

There are boards dedicated to answering questions.  That's why they're locked if you post them here.  Also, don't post in caps, as it will be considered disruptive, and you will be moderated.  It's all in the rules if you bothered to read them when you signed up.

Why would that surprise you? That sort of thread inevitably leads to discussion of illegal piracy websites, which is a big no around these parts.

That's sort of like telling a police officer that you didn't know the speed limit in a play ground zone is 30 km/h. He'll still give you a ticket. The rules are posted in the stickies, and it's your responsibility to know what they are. Just don't ask something like that again.  Simple.

Not to mention the Terms of Use agreement you have to agree with simply to register here. Might want to brush up on that while you're at it.

I only tend to correct my friends when they use the wrong word, or use one in an incorrect context.

I don't mind being corrected if I misunderstood something.  It's only when they have to get into a long, drawn-out explanation that I go batty.  Or if they have to be insulting about the way they correct you.

Also, it can be tricky asking questions sometimes in the correct manner or location.  The sheer number of threads and forums can be a bit confusing to a newbie - I was modded on a question thread myself when I first started posting.  Of course, now I know my way around but I can relate to the frustration of anyone thinking they WERE following the right channels to start with.

Ignorance is curable, stupidity is forever.

oh i make up words all the time, it doesn't matter....if he tries to seem intellectual and that he knows something, tell him that language is a fallacy created by man and can be changed and added to at will....that or you can just ignore him

People that annoy me I just get rid of and move on. I can't stand condescending people who like to jump on every little mistake a person makes to make themselves feel superior, etc.

I speak correct Lithuanian without any pronunciation mistakes, so there actually isn't anyone who can correct me on my language. Of course, I'd be thankful if people corrected my English :))
