Today i started to read a atheist authors book. I dont remember the name of the book but i am a believer of God. But i am pretty accepting of atheist views and have no problems with them. Unless they blatantly have a problem with me. So anyway i started to read this book and while im reading it i can see where the author is coming from and start to actually see his points on some views. Until he blatantly starts writing in a hostile way towards all religion and views. Why would you do this if you want to spread the word that religion is bad? Why call out many of your readers and basically call them all stupid and wrong for their beliefs. Do any of you guys find this a little disturbing? I dont agree with most churches and religious people either on the other side. Damning people and telling them they are going to hell is also a stupid thing to do imo. Why do both sides result to these hostile views?

This is why.

Edit: To clarify:

It's because people on both sides suffer from this. Some Atheists believe they are superior to religious people because they are "right" and the religious are "wrong". Some religious people believe they are superior to non-religous people and project their attitudes and beliefs on others since they are "right" and others are "wrong."

I'm religious (Christian) and it irritates me to see people behave this way on both sides of the spectrum.

We do not damn people; thats God's job. But Christ spoke about Hell as well. Hell has become taboo in a sad way. But I digress. I foind it distuirbing to be told that beliveing in God is stupid yes. Parents tell their children "There are no monster under your bed or in your closet once or twice and thats the end of it. But to tell otheres "there is no God" shows that there is a suppression of something no one wants to hear and doesn't want to deal with the morally wrong things they do when their conscience tells them that what they did was wrong. Therefore, there is a God.

Arrogance is a sin. Islam teaches to practice your faith properly and NOT push your religion in other people's faces; if they want to go to hell it's their own problem. We must try to do our own good, and our best in this world.

The small group of loud mouthed atheists are hostile because they think they're under attack. They think that religions are trying to control every thing and everyone, so they feel the need to be defensive. I used to be a loud mouthed atheist, but I try to be more humble now. It doesn't accomplish anything to burn holy books or to insult someone just for having faith,

I agree, I used to be Mad As Hell and Wasn't Going To Take It Anymore! I had religion force-fed to me my whole young life and I reasoned my way out of it. I would blast and condemn any organized faith but all it ends up doing is making you look just as crazy and fanatical as the Holy Rollers. Now I just politely decline ... because I know better for ME.

Everyone knows what is right for th .... wait did I just say that? Nevermind. Religion is right for certain people, and not for others, simple as that. We all need to be fairly decent human beings, regardless of belief system.

I read The God Delusion recently and I found he struck a good medium, although I am atheist so whenever he did make a remark about a religion or religion in general, I would just laugh. Anyway, he points these things out because he generally thinks that religion should be squelched if we want to move forward as a species. He isnt going to pull punches. If he says things that irritate you, maybe its b/c you already werent secure with your beliefs. Then again, I have no idea what book you read, so he could have just been a ****.... BTW, you werent forced to read the book. You chose to.

i fully agree, the thing i dont get about either side is how they are so conclusive and deem their stance as the only correct one and there for anyone who disagrees is some sort of idiot. there is no solid proof of or against there being a god and for religious people there does not need to be any proof as if there were there could not be faith.

That is the goal of Communism is to squelch religion. But certain religons such as Christianity, thrive on persecution. You cannot stamp it out.

You seem to be generalizing both sides pretty badly here, assuming that the motivation behind both the religious and irreligious is to prove the other side wrong. I've met some very intolerant people in my life, but for the most part, both theist and atheist alike that I know have no desire to "destroy" the other, or even disprove it.

Would this be Richard Dawkins by any chance? He can be a real dick sometimes.
