How do you feel about them and what are your thoughts?

I took antidepressants for 3 years and stopped 6 months ago. Curious as to what you think of them and if you have ever tried them for a long period of time. The one thing I have to say about them is that they are like any other drug. You just have to know your mind.

I do not support them for anyone who is not yet an adult, and at that point I think they should be a last resort. I have been depressed since I was 8 years old. On and off, I have a more stretched-out version of manic depression called dysthymia, where often the spikes of happy and depressed aren't so severe, and last longer. That's what I've been told anyway, I don't know if that's the official-est name for what I feel. Somebody I love very much tried to kill themselves on antidepressants. They were underage at the time, 16 I think, which is why I don't support them at ALL for minors. That threw me so badly I was at one of the lowest points I've ever been at, and if at that time I had been on antidepressants, I would have killed myself. I do know my mind, and I know that I can never take antidepressants or anti anxiety medication because I will f myself right up on them.

I was on them some years ago... they told me I would have to take them indefinately but after a couple of years I weaned myself off of it... I feel better without them but I have to say that in hindsight it is extremely important NOT to take the same course of action that I did by stopping the meds... this is something that should ONLY be done on the advice of (and under the guidance of) your doctor. Altogether, though, I think that the medical community is far too quick to just put people on drugs without any attempt to deal with the underlying issues that can cause people to become depressed in the first place...

My brother has had clinical depression since he was a kid. They help him some what, but it's mostly a mind over matter thing.

I was on a few medications a couple of years ago. Then I stopped taking them for a year. At the start of this year, I was prescribed an antidepressant and the difference is incredible. It's not like I'm bouncing off the walls or anything. I just feel better.

I suffer from anxiety disorder from my accident in which I nearly died. It has gotten a little better but its been two years, and I try to deal with this. I never asked for antidepressents. By having this little accident it also brought on the feeling of depersonalization, it is the worst feeling in the world it is still the sole reason I have anxiety and I feel depressed.

My depression stems from my PTSD as well, I also nearly died from an accident. Had to have 12 hour brain surgery to save my life. The feeling of depersonalization is normal. For 10 years I have felt as if my peers and friends never could understand what I know about life and it's capriciousness. But that is just my perspective based on my experiences. They have no bearing on what others see. Since my accident I have had a true death wish. As if God didn't finish me. It has taken time for me to come to terms with this.

Suprisingly, anti-depressants can be used for more than just depression. They can also be prescribed for pain or to help you sleep. I've been on them a few times for all 3. They did help with my muscle & bone pain, but as a side effect it made me want to kill myself. So I thought it would be better to deal with the pain till I could get a medication prescribed that didn't have that side effect.

I think they can be extremely helpful for some people.

I took several anti depressants that I hated or that I don't think did anything. But I think Effexor changed my life.

...For those with minor to moderate depression; those with severe depression still see a significant benefit from antidepressants. C'mon, it's right in the third paragraph.

That out of the way, I agree with the study's findings: most people are going to bewayyyyy better off with therapy, a social support network and other lifestyle changes. Even if antidepressants were effective in mild-moderate cases, you're potentially still making the mistake of treating the symptom rather than the disease.

i've been working in psychiatry for the better part of a decade, and the only thing i've really learned in that time regarding antidepressants when it comes to the drug in a general sense, is that you can't really generalize its uses in a practical way beyond what it might and might not do for you

They're bogus and addicting. They don't work, the placebo effect is what makes the difference. But you do get addicted to them. Don't take them if you ever get suggested to start taking them. Start exercising instead and change your life, instead of eating pills. Trust me.

I readily concede that most people do not need to take anti-depressants and that many people who do likely don't need them. That said, you don't know what you're talking about. I tried several anti-depressants before what I'm taking right now with no noticeable effect. Anti-depressants aren't use as "happy pills." At least, that's not how it's working for me. As a matter of fact, if I were to just sit on my ass and take the pills, I'd feel almost as lousy as I would without them. What it does is it allows me to enjoy doing things and being active. Was I capable of doing things before treatment? Of course, but nothing elevated my mood. When you're depressed (Real depression, people.), you can't just walk it off.

My girlfriend's 16, and she's been on anti-depressants for months now. I can understand that they may not be effective for minor depression, but in some cases it's definitely necessary

Thats what I did, but it took me a whole year to recover.. could have easily recovered in 6 months if I took them.
