As an agnostic, I still find people's opinions on religion more interesting to think about than anything else. Especially lately, I've been understanding a lot of perspectives about life and all I can do is appreciate them. I don't understand how people can think other people are stupid for believing in things. Also, if you express that you're more interested in their opinion and show them complete respect, you're likely to get more in return and then the world becomes a better place (was that so hard?).

I respect religious people because I understand people's reasoning.

I think it's important to maintain tradition. For example, imagine a God actually did come to Earth one time and mesmerized the entire world and then left. After 500 years there would be people calling people who believe in it stupid ect. We should just all accept that we all have different beliefs and most importantly RESPECT one another.

I also understand that there are many different types of people involved in religion, and it's not right to put them all into one category.Another thing is you may just have to accept that you don't understand the entirety of religion. You should learn to accept things you don't understand sometimes, rather than just insult it. And also it's important to not generate superiority thoughts in your mind, because in my experience they are destructive to your thinking process.

I respect religion as a theoretical notion.

Not so much how it has been actualised throughout the centuries.

There is a difference between respecting the person and respecting the religion. I can and do still respect people or are religious(barring anything they have done the lose my respect). Even though I can respect religious people doesn't mean I will respect their religion. Not all believes are equal, some are just plain wrong. I have no problem with saying that people's beliefs are wrong.

I believe in God but I don't really like religion. I do respect others' beliefs but I will never say I like it.

I respect the faith/religion of certain people but it's difficult to generalize and say that I respect religion as a whole.

Yes I can see where a religion that promotes love would be the answer. Especially when it says to love enemies. I mean...wow. Why should we?

If a person's religion causes them to vote in a democracy or otherwise act in such a way that makes one feel as though one's rights are being threatened, it would seem reasonable to me for one not to feel compelled to respect that person's religion.

I respect relgion, however I don't agree with many organised religions. For example I look at the Catholic Church and they literaly don't do any of the things they preach and are massivly corrupt from the top down to parish level.

I have a great respect for Buddishm and Buddists as they truely embrace it as a lifestyle and it's hugely beneficial but I won't say I agree with it's beliefs butmore withit's methods.

Yes. Though I think you see more aggressive people here because it actually encourages conversation (whether they're good is another matter of course), instead of something like "Let's pat ourselves on the back for believing/not believing in something."

Well I'll respect someone's opinions/beliefs if they present them in a logical or rational fashion (or at least put some thought into their beliefs) and if they are respectful and accepting of others' opinions/beliefs. With that said, when I come across religious people who adhere to that, I will respect their opinions even though I disagree. I don't know if I can really respect whole religions because I don't agree with any of them, but I can respect a lot of the people who follow the various religions (for the criteria I described earlier). I find religion as a whole to be very interesting.

And that agenda wouldnt be respected by someone if it made them experience what vaguellytagged is talking about (or something equivalent), one would reasonably assume.

Not so much, no. If someone's grown faith in an idea for themselves, I guess I can respect that, but when it comes to mass religions that can have a fairly major effect on everybody's life, I don't see why disrespecting them should be any more taboo than disrespecting a political belief.

Nope, and here's why: atheists and agnostics are jealous of our bananas. They want our bananas because they know it's why we're happy, but they can't have any bananas until they believe in God. So no bananas for atheists. This makes atheists mad and sad and jealous and then they get all mean because they want bananas.

I respect true believers. Monks (Christian, Buddhist, whatever) and others that completely give their life to their beliefs (Amish). Not you're everyday, fat, Wal-Mart frequenting, Southern Baptist. If you truly believe in Christ, I honestly can't see how you would not be a priest, monk or something like that. He died so that you can have eternal bliss.

its not that I dont choose to respect religion. Its that I dont feel any respect for religion. There isnt an ounce of genuine respect for religion in my entire being. You cant induce or inflict respect.

there is a clear difference between tolerance and respect. I tolerate religion. I dont go out trying to burn churches or assault mosques. I just dont show religion any special courtesy or reverence. I dont think it deserves any. From what I have seen, it deserves condemnation at worst and ridicule at best.

What type of environment do you live in? I actually see this all the time, but I'm in a rather mixed, varied, and liberal environment as most US urban areas tend to be. I've noticed significantly less tolerance and even extremism is rural areas though. I hear the south tends to be rather bad as well, although I've never experienced that area for more than a week or so at a time.

I can't say that I respect or disrespect religion as a whole. Some people use it for good, and other people use it for evil. I respect the former.

I respect religion on the local and personal level; I feel local churches, temples, etc do a lot of good things for the community. They also have good pancake breakfasts. On the personal level, most people I know are decent enough to realize we dont want to hear about their beliefs, so they keep religion to themselves. Mostly.

I only hate religion o nthe large scale, or when it is spoken about by talking heads and the vocal minority on cable news shows.
