I would recommend my fav anime but since you want something like DBZ I'd say go with One Piece for now. And skip the filler please.

Naruto is an entertaining shounen action anime. Just make sure you skip fillers.

Yu Yu Hakusho is like DBZ, but much better. Other great anime (that aren't really like DBZ though) are Neon Genesis Evangelion, Monster, Steins;Gate, Kara no Kyoukai, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and Gintama.

If you something down to Earth, realistic, and not typical DBZ~ish and fantasy aka Shonen-type. Try Bakuman.

Not sure if you'll like these but I really liked them after seeing them on Toonami in Summer/Fall 2012. FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Cowboy Bebop, and Deadman Wonderland.

Hellsing Ultimate, if you can handle violence then you will thank me.

EDIT: And the current big shonnen series are simular to DBZ(One Piece, Fairy Tail, Naruto, Bleach)

Just beware:

A: Don't watch the 4Kids version of OP. DON'T!!!

B: Bleach has good fights and a few great arcs, but the plot goes downhill fast. The manga gets stupid, very very stupid after the Soul Society arc. And the anime is known for its ********* horrible filler arcs. Go in expecting the Michele Bay of manga.

With any Anime that's based on a Manga, the Manga is always better in story-telling and overall closure when it ends. I like Bakuman's Anime because it took the Manga's series created by the fictional Mangakas in the story and fleshed them out with Audio cues. It's interesting to see. Though the Manga's story pacing is/was better.

Other than that, I always prefer Manga.

Me too~ Also, most of the time, the anime either diverges to an original ending, or pauses at a point without continuing. My fav anime/manga is Skip beat, the way the anime ended....could not be called an ending, its like they're telling us :"okay here is something for you kids we're done." It's thanks to it I knew manga even existed in the first place, and I certainly don't regret knowing about it :3

Pokemon and Yugioh were ones that used to be good, but over time all the good ideas ran out and they became stale.

Those two were never really good nor are they suitable for adults to watch without cringing, IMO. The Animes are mostly targeted at kids even in Japan. They're a Marketing device to expose the games to the general public's awareness and/or target market.

Yeah I see what you mean, if you ask me, Pokemon is basically Japan's own version of SpongeBob, sure, they may not share any similarities whatsoever, but the way both of those shows get milked and continue on for so long with so many new episodes with a lot featuring villains like Team Rocket and Plankton I find to be similar.

Indeed, I don't think you can get more nostalgic than the very first season/first generation. Back when there was only 151 Pokemon.

Best recommendation that can ever be given out on the subject of Anime is to avoid the medium as a whole.

There are plenty of people who enjoy watching Yugioh and Pokemon despite being adults. Hell, Yugioh is advertised towards the same age group in Japan as Bakuman.
