My mum can speak English fairly well, knows the alphabets and all but her reading is really poor. Seeing as i have some free time before i go back to university, i want to improve her reading.

What guides are out there that would get her proficient at reading?

There are plenty of foreign language courses available, and even if you are now living in a English speaking society, you should be able to find a course for her on English As A Second Language. Some language course providers would be Linguaphone or RosettaStone.

Your local library should have plenty of these courses in books and on CD available to borrow (there might be a very modest fee but nothing like the cost of actually buying all the course equipement yourself). They should also be able to put you in touch with other places that may be running community language courses for people like your mum.

Edit: D'oh missed the main point of my post - The library would also advise her on and allow her to borrow various reading materials that'd her Engish Language reading in particular, from books designed for children learning to read, up to more interesting yet still concise shorter stories and novels for non-confident adult readers.

Hope this helps and she has fun learning :)

Watch movies with subtitles it's the easiest way to learn a whole language.

Watch a spanish movie with spanish subtitles for example.

Edit- just do vice versa.
