If so what language do you program in, what plateform, and what is your goals.

I program in C++, currently on the win32 console application, but pretty soon will be programming on win32 applications. My goal is to become a video game programmer. I took an online course that was all on the C++ language. Now i am in another C++ module 2 where the first 4 chapters are on the console, then the rest is windows and 2D. So i am close to being an official game programmer.

I also got second place with a console game.

I'm still in high school so I am limited to what I can learn. My schools doesn't offer many programming courses. I'm learning visual basic right now and it's incredibly easy.

I program for a living actually...or will be once i start my job this thursday:-p. I will be programming in Java. I've had plenty of experience in C++, MATLAB, VHDL, ASSEMBLY, and MYSQL while i got my bachelor's in Computer Engineering. C++ and JAVA are probably the most useful ones i know though. Good luck with the game programming haven't really ever done anything for a game.

I know C++ and Java but my uni is based on Java so I'm better in Java in most cases. I'm sure I wouldn't want to be a programmer anyway because the pay here for it is low anyway -___-

I'm not sure if thats true. It depends what type of programmer you are, i think video game programmers typically make a lot.

Depends where you work and what you do. I won't say how much I make, but I will say that most would probably consider it quite a decent living.

Not quite in Asia. In US and other Western countries, yes, they acknowledge that the programmers are the core folks that implements the software and I've seen the top management people even come and have a chat or something with the programmers. Over here, they are just the people that do the back end stuff and that's about it.I guess it's how the organisation of the company are strucutred. But I'm not really into video games programming like you do but rather into data mining and knowledge management..

from what ive heard they make above the average income (in the US) but they are not at all rich. higher ups like the lead designer (cliffyB for example) are the ones who make a lot. and its really hard to get into a position like that.

also, im learning java in high school right now, and i plan on learning other languages (i hear c++ is useful) and making a living through programming.

If it's a international company like Ubisoft, Google or Oracle, yeah, I agree it's good..but they mostly take folks with experience in the field already. System analyst/designer gets a better pay then all of this..but what the heck, I'll probably work for a while..grab an MBA and go to upper managerial level:P

Well, I personally got the job I'm in out of college, so it's not impossible... but if you make it to upper management, you'd probably be making loads more than me, so more power to you there. :P

Basically yes. I use ActionScript 3 which is the programming language in Flash. My goal is to be able to make games, but since I just want to be a designer I'm not working too hard on the whole programming thing. Enough ActionScript to make a game is all I need. (which I'm close to having) Edit: Oh lawl, I didn't even realize it was you until I read your whole post.:P Hey ct1257860.

Yea it really depends what you do. I want to make my own video game team, which is a hard task and mostly fails, but i believe i can do it. Im 15 and by the time I graduate highschool i would already have programmed many 3D games in C++. At that point i would also probably have some demos to show off.

Then i got connections with some 20 year olds off of the college site i work with who would join.

you can enter it 2 ways, the usual way of making simple addictive games first then moving up (get in contact with STEAM if you ever make anything small even if it's just between a bunch of friends) or you could choose the crazy Crytec method and just go head first into making something awesome

For anyone interested in becoming a programmer, Stanford offers free online course materials for some programming and engineering courses. Video lectures, exams, all the good stuff. Basically you can get a Stanford engineering education for free at home (you can't get a degree this way, however). http://see.stanford.edu/SEE/Courses.aspx

No that is only stuff with C++, because its professional game developing, Visual Basic isn't really met for video game programming, i think i heard some people make small little 2D games (that weren't that great) but thats about all you'll get to.
Enless you program for different reasons, but then that sites not for you.

Number # 1 is the way to go, you just can't jump into something with little knowledge and make something "awesome". Plus you have to have a good understanding on a language's syntax. You got to work from the very bottom, then SLOWLY climb to the top.
