Ever since the 8th grade, when I had an amazing math teacher (algebra), I have been doing complex math in my head. Now in Ap algebra II im already doing long order of operations in my head, which include powers, division, adding negatives etc. How are you guys at math?

It depends on who I'm being compared to. Compared to the average person at my high school I'm great. Compared to people in my math class, I'm okay.

I consider the stuff you said pretty easy...

For example: -256 + -479, 6^4 and 1000/6 would be some things I could work out in my head with relative ease... I think this is what you're talking about anyway; I wouldn't really call this complex...

i used to learn mental math (the stuff with the abacus except you do it all in your head... you start out with an abacus, then they give you a paper with an abacus paper, then they take that away and you have to imagine you have one etc.) but i quit before i got to the big numbers. im pretty good at math though.

and your school has AP Algebra 2? we just have honors that leads to more honors before leading you to either AP calc ab or
AP calc BC. i wish we had APalgebra 2 so that are grades could be weighted :(

Algebra I and Algebra II are easy. I passed my Algebra II class sophomore year with a B even though I failed the midterm and the final (didn't bother studying). However, Pre-Calc last year for me was horrible and I barely passed with a C- (there are no Ds in my school). I didn't do so hot in Geometry my freshmen year but I blame most of it on my terrible teacher (he got fired) and the terrible class of which most of the students were sophmore jocks who had to retake the class and their stupid girlfriends (really, they weren't the brightest bunch). The teacher used most of the class time trying to control the students rather than teach any useful information. Consequently I was often tested on concepts that were either discussed briefly because they were interrupted by student behavior or they were never taught at all. I am not sure how I will do in Calculus this year but I hope to make it as painless as possible. It doesn't help though that I can hardly remember any concepts from last year and the fact that I find studying and doing math to be more than a painful chore. In short I am not terrible at math but quite average and I might appear to be bad at it because I find solving math problems to be a tedious and painful process.

i had the same teacher for math b and precalc. she was TERRIBLE. she would just talk about her personal life and how stupid her other classes were. and when you asked a question she would just ignore you or tell you that you should know it. than when the final marking period started this previous year she was having a bad day and i pointed out a mistake (which happen pretty often). she flipped out on me saying she didnt give a f and she stopped teaching for the rest of the year.

Well they dont know what to call it, some people say its honors, some say its college preparation, but really its just harder than normal algebra 2

I consider myself good at Maths, I am taking a uni degree on it afterall. I can't do complex problems in my head though, I like to visualise the problem on paper. I'm not all too good at algebra in my head either and I suck at the countdown number problems.

Is this asking about general mathematical ability, or specifically about one's ability to do math in one's head?

I would rate those as "great" and "OK", respectively.

I did at least 90% of Honors Algebra I in my head... I'm in Honors Geometry and I get an automatic F if I don't show my work. The only upside about that is that it's Geometry and you'd have to show most of your work anyways, but still... :?

I'm ok with math, but not particularly great at it. I forgot most stuff from high school tbh.

For some reason people generally seem to think i must be really good at math because i'm a programmer, but in reality i rarely if ever use complex math in my work. Algorithms is just logics, you don't need to know complex math.

We have to show work so we can't use calculators. Altough, it's really stupid as I got marked off for doing 10/2 in my head without showing the work. What? Do you think I cheated to do that?

Thats like the exact opposite as my 8th grade math teacher. She was horrible. But I am great in math, I'm going into 9th grade, and I'm taking Algebra 1 honors (I took Algebra 1A in 8th, but I felt like doing the whole thing in half teh time to make up for my horrible teacher and to have more of a challenge.) My 8th grade algebra teacher always talked and talked and never challenged anybody, never let us do anything hands on. I still aced (most) of the tests she gave, but it felt empty cuz I wasn't truely learning. Math had been my favorite subject until then...

Mental maths, I'll admit, I'm horrible at, basically from year 6 onwards we were given calculators and just never bothered doing even simple sums so as a result I'm absolutely lost without a calculator, when it comes to the concepts and understanding the processes and what not I'm reasonably good.
