Anybody in OT live in Texas?

Specifically around the Austin area? I've finally talked my other half into moving there from NY but the only part of Texas I'm sort of familiar with is San Antonio, and I don't want to go back there.

Is anybody familiar with the suburban areas around Austin? What the names of some of the cities are that are pretty nice?

I know a bunch of people from Austin that quite enjoy living there but never been there myself. In any case, if you do decide to move, best of luck and hope all goes well and that you enjoy your new place! =)

Austin, Texas? Isn't that city hella liberal and expensive? Heard it's nice though, wouldn't mind living there if the weather was for me.

You always struck me as a Texas guy rather than a NY guy. Maybe you're finally heading where you truly belong. It would have been nice if you could live in Austin; it seems like a really classy city.

My relatives family live near Austin Texas since forever, they seemed to be happy.. I've never been there myself so I don't know. but I thought about moving to Texas many times, not because I want to, because my town in Illinois jobs aren't doing well.

Yeah it's time to get the hell out of this state. I might have to stop being a cop for a few years, but I can live with that.

Some of the suburbs around Austin include Hays County, Travis County , Williamson County. They are all nice places.

To pay less in taxes and housing, and also to have a lower cost of living. You are insane if you willingly move to California or New York. Unfortunately I was born here and this is where my family is, but I'm so done with this backwards state.

You are quite right that a lower cost of living is a huge factor, heck a lot of my relatives, friends and random hobos from around here have moved out there. I can't imagine living there myself, however, due to my contrary political beliefs and the fact that I can't stand the humidity.

@Allicrombie: It's more humid in CA than Texas, if I recall correctly. Texas has a very dry heat. It's not even really about politics for me. It's about living comfortably and not having my entire income siphoned from me.

Hope you speak Spanish. You need to in order to live in Texas practically.

Depends on where you live in CA. Lots of CA is a desert and is rather dry.

Why don't you move to europe?

Why would I want to move to Europe? If I don't like the laws in New York as it is, I doubt anywhere in Europe will be to my liking.

Kinda expensive there, well, at least where I live it's expensive.

It's far more expensive to live in Europe than the US. I doubt I'll be able to become a Police officer in Europe. I also don't like the gun laws in Europe.

As a police officer you're the only one with a gun

so what gun law get's better than that,

But it may not even be possible for an American to become a cop in a European country. And I don't have enough savings to last me until I do become one. So going to Texas where I might be able to get a lateral transfer is the best bet.

And while studying for a cop you're being paid over here.

It's unrealistic. I'd rather go somewhere where I don't need to learn a new language and I can pretty much resume work right away. Skills are perishable, after all.

Too much work, man. If I was younger, fresh out of the military, it may have been an option.

Yet there is definitely some requirement to being a police officer over there. Whether it be a citizenship requirement or a residency requirement. Either way, I wouldn't be able to wait that long. So Texas it is.

Come to San Antonio

I spent six months in San Antonio on TDY while working at SAMMC between September of last year and March of this year. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the place but I'm guessing that your last stay there was when you went to Lackland. To me, the place is great and I probably wouldn't mind retiring over there if I didn't already have plans to retire in Atlanta.

The military footprint is small enough compared to the civilian population to where I don't have to be reminded that there are a few bases there but at the same time having the Commissary at multiple corners of the city if you still had base privileges is pretty convenient. There's a high illegal immigrant population there but that's true in many areas in Texas.

Austin is pretty close to San Antonio as it is. Plus I know two brothers there that have a security group and they seem like they'd be willing to hire me in the interim, until I can go through the modified police academy for Austin.

What's pretty fucked up is I did more in my military career in five years than some POGs do in 20 and I don't even get base privileges anymore. The military is backwards sometimes.

Hey is there a Jackson County in or around Texas ?

Never really liked Texas when I was there...but good luck if you do move there. More politically inline with you though....:P
