If I was any good at psychology I would guess these people have a problem with real life the way it is, and have for some reason have a big problem dealing with it (probably something deep rooted into childhood experiences or a mental difference) and thus; want to have a relationship with/eaten by (or anything else weird) by their favourite cartoon characters.

It comes across to me as some kind of ultra-naive community of people with a strange fetish.

That's a pretty interesting idea. I should write a thesis on Furry culture. Assuming it doesn't shatter my mind, it could be educational.

I have also read that there is a high percentage of people with the "eaten by" one also have Asperger's Syndrome but it could be unrelated. Makes you wonder how the mind makes such connections regardless.
