When I buy a DVD and watch it on my TV its on wide screen. But its way to wide. The movie takes up only half of the entire tv. When I bought a Big screen tv, I wanted the movie to take up the entire screen. Did I pay for parts of the screen that Im not going to use? Why cant it just be left at full screen? My TV is already has a wide screen, why does the DVD have to be wide screen also? Its only shrinking the view of my movie. Its even worse when podcast on the ipod is in widescreen, why does it have to be so small?

I'd rather not use part of the screen than have the ends of the picture lopped off

It creates a more cinematic experience, I guess, though I was annoyed when I found out that Bluray movies weren't even full screen on my HDTV.

If your TV is widescreen and your DVD is too, then it should take up your entire TV... Something's wrong with your configuration.

On the contrary, I loathe 'full-screen' as I prefer to see the film as the filmmaker intended.

Most movies I get are a happy medium between full screen and hardcore widescreen. I've gotten used to the little black bars. :P

Wide screen is more ambiguous than that, there are different ranges of widescreen most commonly 16:10 and 16:9, this make not look like a huge difference but on a 81cm tv you still loose a couple of inches. plus theres resolution as well.

Widescreen isn't 16:10. The standard for widescreen TV's is now 16:9. I made the mistake of buying a 16:10 TV so I had to deal with the stretched image but I managed to program my TV to display black bars so now I have a 16:9 image. :P

You get stuff cut off at full screen. Its actually better to watch it in widescreen, especially if you have a Widescreen TV.

I don't have a widescreen TV, so when I watch a WS movie, it gets all compressed and small and it looks like crap. Fullscreen FTW.

 If you insist... The standard for widescreen TV's is now 16:9... 16:10 is now considered obsolete. That's why all the major HD resolutions are in 16:9. (720p, 1080i, 1080p)

Every TV in my house is widescreen, so I have no problem with it. :) If the aspect ratio is 2:35:1, I can deal with the little black bars on the top and bottom of my screen, but if I watch a 4:3 movie, the black bars on the side get on my nerves. :x However, if the film is 1:85:1, there are no black bars whatsoever. :D

It's actually the movies that differ.:| Some films such as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are shot in a 2:35:1 aspect ratio, hence the black bars. If you watch Clerks I/II for example, there are no black bars. Why? It was shot in a 1:85:1 aspect ratio. It all depends on the lens used during filming.:)

With 2:35:1 films, you're going to get black bars no matter what....Until they make a 2:35:1 Widescreen TV. :P

ya but if he never set it those bars would be twice as big and that would really suck. and if they made a 2 35 1 tv then th 1 85's would look... cut off? or shrunk? idk... but ya i really hope he set his dvd player.

I hate it when people with HDTV's stretch out the picture to fit the entire screen. It looks terrible when they do that.

If it's being broadcast in HD, it looks good and it takes up the entire screen.

~-~I wish they made a wide screen TV that let you control the hight and width separately and gradually so I can chose how much of the black bar I want and how much I want cut off. And of course you'd need a "chance x/y to make screen natural size," button so once you pick how much of the black bar you wanted or how much you wanted cut off you push whatever button and it stretches the sides out to make the picture it's normal dimensions and people don't look fat. The cherry on the cake would be if it let you save settings so you could have like you gaming dimensions and your TV show dimensions and so on. But like hell anyone would make that. Just like how they'll never make a sound system that keeps track of how loud/ quiet it is and then adjusts the volume accordingly. That way when a movie starts to do that thing where everyone whispers it will automatically turn it up then turn it back down once the music and explosions start blaring. Why hasn't anyone thought of that yet.>.>... Yep, it's too bad that no one's done these great ideas before. Yep, I would be a lot more persuaded to get a new TV/ sound system if someone would just use these wonderful, unpatented ideas. YOU LISTENING BIG COMPANIES! I'M NOT GETTING A NEW TV TILL YOU DO!~-~

I don't hate wide-screen but I only hate multiplayer mode for playing game where the the screen is splitted into left and right. I prefer the standard screen mode where they split into top and bottom that allow you to aware of what is beside you.

hello, it's tv manufacturers that came up with 16x9 to more closely represent the anamorphic hollywood movie format. Funny thing is almost all television is shown in 4x3. Which in effect reduces the whole issue into a bunch of hype, that apparantly alot of people have fallen for. if you have a 16x9 widescreen tv only 16x9 content covers the whole screen and vise versa a 4x3 television only displays 4x3 content across the whole screen, which is fine by us because we are gamers and most games and movies are in 16x9 and most tvs now are 16x9. I for one would be pretty angry if i was a broadcast tv freak bought a brand new 16x9 tv and found out it was either fat people or a partial screen. 16x10 is a new format from computer monitor manufacturers which is a competitive edge proposal designed to sell millions of monitors like the 16x9 hype sells millions of televisions . A real mess to say the least that has little to do with customer satisfaction or user friendlyness which both computer manufacturers and television makers boast. the government has also decided to add to the confusion by requiring all tv signals to be digital as of february of 2009 aparantly they want to free up transmission space for emergency and government communication I just wish the would require 16x9 as well. unfortunately that contradicts our own economy and capitolistic marketplace. One good thing is some tv networks are starting to show thier main shows in 16x9. and this all doesnt even include high definition. what a mess...and on a side note i long for a 4x3 television that runs 480p across thev whole screen for my wii. im just sayin..

I love Widescreen particularly on TV shows and my monitor, the bars from movies are kind of annoying, but I would rather have the movie in the original aspect ratio that the director intended still..

well when i play games on the 360, it fills the screen completely. and when i watch DVDs on my 360 i have to usually set the picture to stretch or something, so it fits perfectly. So i have an idea what you are saying about how "wide-screen" can be a pain. But i think your problem is with "letter box." They add a black box at the top and the bottom for subtitles or something and it's stupid.

Also, apparently if you have digital cable with HD TV channels, they are in actual broadcast widescreen format (not letterbox). So if you turn a tv with a 4:3 picture to the channels you'll see a picture squished sideways to fit on the tv.

sorta like if you change picture to 16:9 in GTA III on the ps2. trust me it looks odd.

it wouldn't be left at full screen, the edges of the frame would have to be cropped, in order for it to fit a 4:3 tv. it is also strange that the standard for widescreen tv's is 1:1.78 (16:9) since when it was decided, nothing in the history of film or television was ever shot in that aspect ratio. today most movies are shot either in 1:1.85, 1:2.35, or 1:2.40.
