Hello my fellow English Speaking natives!

Anyway, i don't know what is wrong with me, what happened to me, or to be more accurate what is my problem.

By reading this thread, you are able to judge me, yes the ''Topic Creator'', how my english is at the moment. Ok, i am from Norway and we are learning English at High School. Before High School, my english was like, let's say ''Okay'' not bad and not good. I really want to know what my ''basic'' problem is, 1 week ago i had english exam and i wrote an essay and when i got it back, the result was nothing i have ever expected. I don't know anymore, not only my english is going downhill but some other subjects aswell. I am getting more and more skeptical of my education. Either it is the teachers, the way they judge or it is just me.

What do you guys have to say about this? Thanks for reading, you can flame, put in lame comments all you want. I just want some positive results. Thank you!

Dunno. Your English seems fine. You need to capitalize them 'i's though.

Also, what was the result that you didn't expect? An 'F' or something?

You probably need to work on your commas too.

Hmm, your English is pretty good, considering you're from Norway.

Hello my fellow English Speaking natives! Welis
1. Wouldn't that be fellow native English speakers? 2. I'm not a native to the English language. 3. I do not have a problem with the English language.

No, Japanese, Mandarin and Vietnamese are the hardest languages to learn!

But anyways your english is good, don't forget about having a capital I, but your english is definitely passable if you'd just talk, which unless you wanna be an english writer is all that really matters.

From what you've written here your english appears fine. A couple of minor grammatical errors, but nothing that most people would pick up on, and no-one would have trouble understanding what you are saying.

The best way to practice is find someone who is a native english speaker and practice with them, though since you are in Norway that may be a little difficult. Several of my neighbours are Dutch or Belgian, and they love to come round to chat and ask me to correct their speech when they get something wrong.

Maybe ask your teacher why they gave you the poor grade. Was it just the quality of the english you used and the grammar, or did he not like the content of what you had written?

No actually it's something you learn in school. English is known as the most difficult language in the world. Sure, it only took me about two years to become fluent, but it still remains as the hardest language to master.

Your english is great considering it is not your first language. While there may occsionally be issues with proper grammar, you write well enough to easily convey your message.

That makes no sense whatsoever. What makes it harder than German or Russian, both with extreme focus on the accusative case?

Though, I have heard many other people who had to learn enlgish say the same thing. It has so many exceptions, slang, and contradictory rules that it can be difficult to learn. Though, I would assume that a westerner trying to learn chinese or japanese would be very difficult, too - as the entire language is different and not a romance language.

I so agree on that part! I have 4 languages to learn here, as i said Vietnamese, Norwegian, English and Spanish. And what i am really focusing on is English, because i want to get a work outside Norway and english is a must for that part. :)

In surveys most people say English is the hardest. The reason for it is simple, it's the only 2nd language most people have any experience with. Any person that learned English and a Slavic, Semitic or Asian language will tell you that English is a joke to learn.

English isn't all that easy. The writing doesn't match the pronounciation very well. There are irregular verbs, little standardization to past perfect forms, irregular plural forms of nouns and a huge vocabulary. We have words that have up to six different meanins. You can spell a single word multiple ways. You have to conjugate for every little difference.

English is a second language to me and I found it a breeze. My personal opinion has nothing to do with it.

Yeah, it's hard because of it's dynamic idiomatic nature, but the language structure itself is relatively simple.

The difference lays in the fact that English is by far the most used business language, and therefore the required level of "fluentness" rises...

Do you guys understand what I'm trying to say? :P

Yeah. The difference is, it's used in serious company more, so it has to seem perfect, not just passable.

My two cents. Which, on this sleepy Monday morning, amounts to very little.

I have known several people who use English as their second language. Many of them claim that, in their countries, the instructors are extremely strict on grading English. As somebody pointed out it has complicated/contradictory rules and lots of double meanings, etc.

In the US a student can write an essay breaking all sorts of grammar rules, make themselves easily understood, and receive a satisfactory grade.

In many foreign countries they grade based strictly off the 'textbook' rules and this could result in a poor grade despite the fact that you seem to write coherently and get your point across very well.

I know a post doc who was studying in Germany. She wrote excellent but got ridiculed by German instructors for grammatical mistakes that most Englsih speakers wouldn't recognize or notice.

For instance, I imagine I made all sorts of errors in this post but, hopefully, you can understand what I mean.

Marcus, my man! I am on the same boat as you. Like all other people have posted here, some minor grammar mistakes yet teachers here in Norway are very strict to it. My essay had some minor grammer errors, and they count as a huge amount of loss points, which really sucks. :(

That makes no sense whatsoever. What makes it harder than German or Russian, both with extreme focus on the accusative case?

jointed

I was taught the same in school. I found a website listing the reasons why, if you're interested in taking a look. Whether you're convinced or not though, is no concern of mine.

As for the topic creator, your english is great. You only have a few kinks to work out before you've mastered the language.

That makes no sense whatsoever. What makes it harder than German or Russian, both with extreme focus on the accusative case?

Jandurin

I was taught the same in school. I found a website listing the reasons why, if you're interested in taking a look. Whether you're convinced or not though, is no concern of mine.

As for the topic creator, your english is great. You only have a few kinks to work out before you've mastered the languge.

Hmm, interesting....thanks a lot.

That's what I said. :x

[QUOTE="marcus4hire"] For instance, I imagine I made all sorts of errors in this post but, hopefully, you can understand what I mean.Jandurin
If you broke any rules, they're rules I don't know. :P

Thought I better put that disclaimer on the end. I am just waiting for somebody to jump out from behind a rock, jump up and down, point, and scream "AH HA! You used a past tense participle when you should have used a second order partial derivative in your conjugation!"

Is there anyway you can find these? I'd seriously be interested in having a look (I'm "google-ing" now), because I spent 3 years learning French and never would have thought that.

Wow, a thread an English that comes with cheese and possibly wine? This is truly an all-English affair!

There is a list here for the most common homophones.
