u can say it can be for those things too lol:P
I fast for lent, even though I'm not catholic.
But I fast from habits or things that are bad for me, as a way of cleansing myself. Fasting from food entirely doesn't make sense to me.
He means not eating or drinking anything from sunrise to sunset for a month during Ramadan. BTW if you watched the USC and Washington St. game today, there was a player who was fasting and still was playing at an elite level. I forgot his name, but that guy earned my respect big time. Renegade_Fury
why the hell would you purposefully not eat or drink.
I have been fasting for Ramadan since Sept 13. No food or liquids from 5:30 a.m- 7:15 p.m (sun up to sun down)
It's hard because I run Cross Country, but its character building :P

That's what you're supposed to do during Ramadan. It's supposed to teach you to understand the sufferings of others etc. Christians have lent, but they can eat fruit I think.

Perhaps giving food to the hungry would be more productive then starving your self to know what they feel like :?

.... Wait what? Are you honestly serious that you think your income taxs goes all to the poor? Supposed to? The average person most certainly does not, not to mention now a days in the US people do not hav ehte luxury to do such things with money be so tight for most..
I am sorry this still doesn't justify starving your self..

Uh no. I'm saying the religion itself states that you're supposed to give a portion of you wealth to the poor. This has nothing to do with taxes in the slightest. It's completely separate. As for the fasting itself, it's religion, you don't question it. You either follow it or you don't, it's up to you.

Two points:
It's not 1/3 of your salary bro, its a much less percentage. Zakat (money for the needy) is 3% of your net income.
To the other guy: We arn't starving ourselves, as we eat prior to the fast around 5am, and break fast at 7pm. This is hardly starving yourself. As for fasting in order to "feel how poor people feel" is not the reason we fast. As the hunger felt throughout the day is a reminder for a lot more then just 'understanding' the poor. Fasting is a form of self control. A biological reminder that you are on a mission to better yourself throughout the day. A biological reminder to wake up early for morning prayer, and a reminder for your evening prayer. A constant reminder to better yourself throughout the entire day. It is a reminder for how fortunate you are when you open break your fast.
Ultimately a way to improve yourself as not just a Muslim, but a better human being. So that you learn something, and become accustomed to it for the next 11 months. From which point more improvements to your body and soul can be made.

hi five :)Im fasting too... feels great honestly. Makes you feel greatful for what you have. Fasting helps understand the suffering of the less fortunate. This causes people to help each other. Also, fasting teaches you self control and patience. It may sound stupid to starve yourself for more than half the day. but its seriously worth it.
