They recently announced that they are going to be writing all of the music this year, and recording and mixing it in 2008... so it will probably come out late 2008/early 2009...

another thing, what the hell is taking them so long? Dream Theater stated recording their new album late last year, and its being released this June, about 8 months from start to finish. Why does it take Metallica 2 YEARS to record and produce a new album?
Man..... why did you have to tell me this? Now every day till 2009 is gonna be like the day before christmas for me. I'ma buy like 4 copies when it comes out. I'm anxious to see what direction they're gonna take their career in with the next album.

It's probably because the Metallica idea well dried up a long time ago, while Dream Theater are still full of creativity, heck, DT has great songs they don't even squeeze into their albums. (Like Raise The Knife.)
Metallica needs a miracle or they should really just throw in the towel; they had a good run.
Metallica is just getting too old, and their new stuff IMO hasn't been that great. I won't buy the album, but I'll check it out to see if its any good.
i used to really like Metallica, but not so much anymore, i still listen to Enter Sandman, One, Nothing Else Matters, and a couple of their other older songs, but for the most part i don't really listen to them
