Ok guys I need some advice on how to go about doing this.

Ok here's the problem: "The Hold-It Container Co. is designing an open-top rectangular box, with a square base, that will hold 108 cubic centimeters."

Now the Question I Need Advice on: Express the surface area S as a function of the length x of a side of the base.

I have no idea how to go about this. Please give some advice if you can. Also the problem is in the Rational Functions chapter if that helps any.

Below is a picture reference of the problem (please excuse my MS Paint skills).

umm,i think it is this way: (x^2)(y) equals 108,there you will have surface x and surface y..

That is actually just one part of the problem, there are two other parts as well so you really are just giving me some advice.

Yeah I'm just asking for advice geeze. Besides how am I supposed to know which one of you is right? I will have to go through and solve the equation myself anyway.

i think you'll be ok.

also, i think the way to work it out is starting with something like this:

surface area base = x squared

surface area side = xy

volume = 108 cm cubed, so x squared times y = 108

so y = 108 divided by x squared

with taht, you can subsititute and make everything in terms of x, then solve, using total surface area equation of : x squared + 4xy

best of luck :)

Yeah I think I can. Hold on I'll plug it into my calculator. Oh and by the way we aren't turning these problems in for credit or anything, it's just to make sure we understand the material, so think of them as practice problems.

Volume = (x^2)y = 108 Surface area = (2x^2) + 8xy Brackets are unnecessary but are added to make it clearer. If you need to put it in just terms of x then: y = 108 / (x^2) Then substitute in for y Surface area = (2x^2) + 8x(108 / (x^2) = (2x^2) + (864x / x^2) You could simplify it more to get rid of that fraction but other than that it think that's about right. I'm currently doing the same sort of thing but with trig in it.

Yeah just wait and see this homework thread will be cool! Yep we'll apply this equation to physics and then we'll understand how the Havok physics engine works in Half-Life 2. Yep that's what I think we should do.

Alright I got it

so X = 10 and y = 1.08

then (10)^2 times 1.08 = 108

so does that mean that the function F(x) = x^2 + 4xy is the correct answer or did I miss something? Give me a hint

That would be incorrect. This is an open top box, you've given the equation for a closed top box. As it's open topped 2 surfaces of every side are exposed so you should double what you've written.
