My parents used to be like this..My Dad still is but my Mom has shifted her beliefs quite a lot. Until the age of 12 they forced me to go to a Church filled with total Nutjobs. Instead of Playing "Tag" in my sunday School we would play "Chase the Devil". I told my Sunday School teacher that I was reading the Lord of The Rings books and she FREAKED, Saying that if I didnt stop I was gonna go to hell. I got so scared of Sunday School and I asked my mom if I could attend the Adult service Instead.

I was even more freaked out by what was going on there. Everyone was speaking in Tounges and acting like nutjobs. The pastors sermon was very stupid and ignorant and almost everything he said didnt make sense to me. My parents raised me like this until around 13 when they decided that it was to much trouble. I wasnt even allowed to watch Spongebob Squarepants unntil the age of 12!. I know that not all Christian People arent like this. It just disturbs me that this kind of Brainwashing is happening all over the US

Thats why I became an Agnostic..I know there is a god out there that Created the Universe but I do think we evolved from Primates..

A lot of what you said reminds me of a documentary called Jesus Camp. The reason why some pastors don't like Lord of the rings and/or Harry Potter is because they believe that witchcraft and spells are tools of Satan. Evangelicalism is the only sect that creeps me out.

Is that the movie with the dude who drank the entire pitcher of Kool-Aid and wouldn't fess up to it, so one of the counselors starting running laps and spraying chemicals in his eyes?

No, I don't remember that happening. Jesus Camp is the one where kids worship a cardboard cut-out of George W. Bush.

Oh. I remember seeing a clip from one movie (I know it was a comedy) and it was about a bible camp where the event I described happened. I may want to check out Jesus Camp though, sounds pretty entertaining.

I can't really answer that because I'm not an Evangelical. Maybe this will clear some things up:

What made them change their mind? Did they read the Bible? Did they read secular books like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Did they read books like The God Delusion?

How did they feel when they rejected Christianity?

I went to a Christian kindergarten that taught creationism. They were saying that the dinosaurs lived 5,000 years ago, but I was nuts about dinosaurs back then, and already knew that they lived 65 million years ago. Awkward moment when a kindergarten student questions the scientific validity of your lesson. I told my parents (who had no idea about the creationism angle), and they made sure that I didn't get any more creationism lessons.

Wow, that must of sucked. My parents believe in a god, but they are very very open-minded about hearing about other religions or Evolution.

How did they feel when they rejected Christianity?Genetic_Code

1.) They started to realize Religion as more of a divider than a uniter, seeing the holy wars and Jihads waged all over the world. They now say things along the caliber of "If there is a god, he sure as hell doesn't care about us."

2.) I never asked them, but I think they felt the same way as I did... Relieved.

LMAO. They're baptizing with bottled water. That's almost as shallow as their faith is.

...

Interesting. I'll answer my questions to you just to be fair.

I became an atheist a little over a week after I finished reading the entirety of the Bible. Not the "recommended" version where you read certain ports out of order to fit the mainstream Christian's view of it. Just the way I felt that it should be read. I read it with a pro-Christian and a pro-theistic evolution bias as well. However, when I noticed my bias, I put it aside and I realized that I was spinning the Bible's words just to make it say what I wanted, not what I really felt was there.

I became an atheist out of default and I felt rejected, mainly because I had signed on for a Christian camp the next week and I had to go. There was no backing out. That week was a pretty bad week but I could have much, much worse. Still, the feelings of rejection kept onto me for awhile. Now, it's not so much. Specifically when I don't go to church, I feel as though I'm not reciting something of which I don't believe. However, I still end up in church by each Sunday usually. Not that church is bad but I think there is more that can be done with that hour. However, as an atheist, I became more social with people. I used to be really shy but when I was an atheist, I began to understand people more.

If you believe that God exists then you're not agnostic. You're just a Christian who is intelligent enough to realize that creationism is a bunch of bs.

Anyway, to answer the question, I luckily never had to grow up in an evangelical environment. Heck, my family barely even went to church.

Honesty, people like that sicken me. It's people like the ones who went to your previous church that make so many other people dislike Christianity because they think we're freaks. But, yes, I have been raised my Christian parents. My church is NOTHING like that though.

P.S. I love the Lord of The Rings. :P

I grew up with a healthy balance of religion in my life. I spent my whole school life in Christian schools, but didn't go to Sunday School or Bible Camp or some place where they pound in stupid beliefs.
