Actually, I don't like St. Patrick's day. A lot of people just use it as an excuse to act silly, and its really annoying. Honestly, non-Irish folk make 10x a bigger deal out of it than (we) Irish people do, and usually the actual Irish kids you DO see running around wearing green this and using green that, forget for the rest of the year where their ancestors come from. So how do u think about St. Patrick's day??

I don't think the mods will really take kindly to your use of the word "retarded" as being synonymous with "stupid". St. Patrick's Day is not about ancestry. It's a commercial holiday even moreso than Christmas is. At least the majority of people know why Christmas is celebrated. As for people who aren't Irish making a bigger deal of it than the Irish do, look around you. If I had a nickel for every time somebody who wasn't Italian added either a Mob-Boss NY accent or a Mario accent to everything they said relating to anything Italian-ish (pasta, pizza, that song that is always played in fake Italian eateries) I'd be rich. And if I also had a nickel for every time a non-British person said something stupid like "pip pip, cheerio!", or more recently (since harry potter and skins, mostly) "bloody hell", "bollocks", or "bloke" to name a few, I could probably have enough money to make Bill Gates my personal slave. Just give up caring. It's been commercialized, it won't ever revert back to being sacred or anything. People now just use it as an excuse to drink heavily and eat as many dyed-green foods as they can. Nobody cares about the origins of it anymore.

I dont like going to pubs on that day/night...the same with new years eve. Seems to be and idiot fest for amateur drinkers. Maybe I'm just getting old or have not discovered the appropriate establishments. Then again, if I had the week off and was with a bunch of friends, I could see myself being lured into the mix if I had a good start. 50/50 on it I guess. But one thing is for sure, I like to partake in the corn beef and cabbage tradition.

Being ingnorant of the full history/reason for St. Patrick's Day, I view it like this....

Most of us work hard all year to take care of ourselves and our family. So, if there is a day here and there that gives us an excuse to cut loose a little, then I'm all for it. Sort of like Valentine's Day. It's not really a significant "holy day" or a national holiday or anything, but if it's a good excuse to go out and have a nice romantic dinner, then thats terrific.

I'm from the Orange half of Ireland.... I couldn't realy care less about it as a holiday but I'l still go out. and get wasted (Not that I really require a reason for that) simply because women flock to me like a seagull round bread.

I probably won't wear green tho, and if anyone pinches me I'l give them a history lesson Because Ireland is not entirely green, Theres a massive amount of people who associate with Oragne and the colour of St Patrick is actually Blue. Which is why the Ireland football team intially played in blue and had to change due to a clash with Scotland.

I really don't like it. It reminds me of my ex. If everyone wants to go drink beer all day, just make a national "beer drinking in public day". You don't have to hide it under the guise of Irish people.

sunnysunny2012

My biggest issuethe TC's postis Americans who come up to me constantly saying "I'm Irish", I ask from where, and they inevitabley reply, "Well I'm not from Ireland, but my grandmother was." That makes you of Irish decent, but not Irish. I think I speak for most people actually born and raised in Ireland that we find that annoying.

As for St Patricks day, for most people in Ireland its an excuse to have a good time and a day off. We don't dress like ****ing leprechauns, we don't dress all in green, we don't dye our beer green, we don't eat corned beef and cabbage. We do (mostly) get rip roaring drunk though :P

The same can be said for a lot of holidays, actually. Like Thanksgiving, a lot of people don't care that it's celebrating invaders landing in American, stealing land from the natives, killing them with diseases and then having a giant feast afterward. No, they just use the day as an excuse to watch non-stop football while gorging themselves. The way I look at it, though, is so long as people are enjoying themselves, let them. Don't be an Irish Scrooge.

I'm part Irish with a lot of family in Ireland and I don't really care what St. Patricks day is about. I use it as an excuse to party with my friends. Its basically the same as every other holiday so I don't understand the problem.

It's a fun holiday, get over it. I'm Irish, along with many other heritages, but just like other holidays America has made it it's own in a way. Just enjoy it for what it is, or seclude yourself to your room for that day so you don't have to "experience" the annoying holiday.

One of my favorite holidays. I don't get drunk, but it is a good excuse to go out with friends and enjoy a Guinness or three, which puts everyone in a good mood. Science says those who drink Guinness are the happiest people in the bar. ;)

I don't hate it, but I sure don't care about it.

Actually, I don't care about any holidays.

However, when my 10k post party rolls around, that day will be the stuff of legend.

It's that day when everyone claims that they are Irish and it therefore makes them ten times cooler. You aren't irish.. You are American.. and kudos if you can ACTUALLY trace back your ancestry to Ireland.

You should run around pinching drunk people. It's fun, and I promise they won't punch you. Ok they might, but that's what makes it exciting.

I add green food colouring to my mash potatoes and wear something Green.

what purpose is served by "hating" a holiday?

if you don't like Saint Paddy's Day then simply don't celebrate it and if you want to avoide the thing stay away from crowds for one day.
