Hi guys, I'm new to tennis, and I need some advice mainly for my serves because they don't have any consistency.

Do you have any advice on how to do a standard high speed serve (and to usually get it in)? I've had the most success using a pure Western grip so far, but it's still not that great.

I also want to know how to do the American Twist Serve (so if you could explain which grip: eastern, continental, or western and what I should do during the serve)

On a side note, I use a two-handed backhand right now, but I have trouble controlling it. Do you have any tips on how to hit your backhand where you want it? I would like to be able to do a one-handed backhand eventually, but I need to build up my arm strength some more.

Please help me, I'll be sure to mention you when I win Wimbledon ;)

Hmm...I'm good at tennis, but I just do it, I've never payed attention to how I do it. Guess it's just natural to me now, I don't think about it. So I guess I can't help you. :P

lol i've played like 5 times, i'm getting the hang of it.

I'm just saying for some serves (Twist Serve for example) there are very specific motions you need to do, and I'm kinda teaching myself how to play

In all honesty, you need to just keep serving. Get a few tennis balls and go to the court and either serve back and forth to a friend or serve as many as you can, pick them up, and go to the other side and serve. One day it'll click and you'll feel comfortable with serving. You shouldn't rely on a speed serve if you're just starting because it's far too inconsistent. Learn to hit the serve with some slice--by brushing the side of the ball with the racquet. It'll kick depending on how well you hit it. You'll want to try to think of just hitting the fuzz on the side instead of the ball. Once you get a consistent slice serve, you'll be naturally able to serve it a little faster. A fast serve is great and all, but if it's just a straight serve, it will only need to be blocked back over the net. Some slice, which provides kick, will at least make the returner move and not feel as comfortable waiting for a straight serve. As for the backhand, don't worry about two handing it. I do. If that's how you naturally hit a backhand, embrace it. You also need to realize that when you hit a backhand, you'll usually lob it until you learn to change your swing and/or grip so that the racquet is perpendicular to the ground when contact is made. Back to the serve, I haven't found a consistent approach to serving as fast as I can. That's nearly impossible. I've only been playing for four months or so and haven't played in at least a month since tennis season is over. Regardless, I have learned to hit faster and faster on my serve just because it's become a more natural motion for me. The most important thing is to learn to hit a good forehand with topspin so you can put some heat on it. If you partner that with a decent serve and the ability to backspin one juuuuuust over the net, you'll be much better than you may think. You can hit it deep or short and keep the opposition guessing.

here is a link for the serve http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=460AXj7qSAQ&feature=SeriesPlayList&p=DD24372A5B61992D continue on to the other videos on the right just try to find your best and easiest stance (without forgetting the basics of course) and try to serve inside the box without adding so much power and then start adding it bit by bit until you get the hang of it,it worked for me for the other stuff you mentioned i'm pretty sure you'll find plenty of videos on youtube just write sth like "how to________in tennis" and yeah about the twist serve (which i think you really wanna do it like Ryoma :P) there's a video called "tennis serve pronation" i'm not sure if it's it (cuz i didn't watch it just found it) but the comments about it say so

I just play it casually in the summer and I had no idea there were specific terms for things, especially different kind of grips. What I have found out though is the more you play and get used to it the more you can control yourself. So you learn how much power to put into a shot through practice.

I'm not good at tennis, I'm okay with batmidden though or however it's spelt. It's in positioning. If you can get to it, you can get it back to the other side.

1. western grip for serve? no,no,no!! continental. assuming your right handed, throw the ball straight up and slightly to the right, and in front of you. hit the ball at the highest point you can. really reach up for it. 2. stop idolizing that echizen kid or whoever it is from prince of tennis. the american twist serve is a kick serve. what you do is, using the continental grip, instead of hitting up on the ball like you would for a normal serve, you come around the side of the ball, in a diagonal manner. 3. try to stick with the two handed. the one hander might be glamorous, but trust me, the 2 handed is usually better unless mastered at the pro level. always make sure you have good fast footwork to get yourself in position for the shot, and pretend your hitting a lefty forehand. this should help.

It takes practice to get good at it. Keep trying, invest time and effort and remember to whack the ball like you hate it.
