Currently, the Hubble space telescope is nearing completion of it final fix up. It is being upgraded with better technology, a more powerful camera, shielding and replacement of a faulty battery for it's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph.

Images from the Hubble are already the most impressive ones we have of the cosmos and I'm excited about the prospect of even more stunning photos of our infinite universe, and possibly, new discoveries.:o

The contribution of the last Hubble were immense, so I'm obviously curious about what they'll see and discover after these upgrades... especially during the first months. After they've played around a bit, they'll probably use it to do a dozen or hundred completely uninteresting tests and observations >_>

I think the re-commissioning of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph will prompt a more aggressive search for more extrasolar planets. Maybe we can see more definitive images of one, but that might be asking for too much.:P

No, the government can already see what I'm doing every day, do I really want them to be able to count the hairs on my head?

??? I don't think Hubble can photograph the Earth, nor do I thinkNASA would want to. It's a telescope, not a satellite.

I'm getting back into astronomy thanks to The Universe show that I've been watching, so yeah, anything that helps us learn more about our incredible universe I am all for.

Imaging spectrographs don't give you any nice pictures though >_> they only give back some colorful lines/data that helps you identify materials in a system. Sure that might help NASA find some new planets or new strange space phenomenon or new info about the Big Bang... but is it expected to find that detailed snap shot of a alien planet base? Probably not -_-

Well, I heard that the optics were improved in a way that made the Hubble 90 times more powerful, so we'll probably still see a few cool things... I hope.

Im hoping that as one of their tests, they will capture images of something they have done before, something like Saturn or the Orion Nebula, although im aware that they take time to capture and process.

They would look for extrasolar planets with the STIS and image the source with the new optical camera. That's what I meant. I don't phrase my thoughts well in type.:P

I can't wait. Supposedly, the first images won't be released right away so I guess we'll have to wait a week or two. :(

Maybe we'll be able to find that galaxy far, far away. With the recruiting power of the U.S., the Jedi would have a bunch of new recruits :P.
