Basically it's when people who function normally during other times of the year, but when winter (especially around the Holiday season) comes around, a select number of people experience symptoms of depression.

I think I may suffer from it mildly ,'specially now since I lost someone over the summer, my first year at college, being home-sick, etc. And the whole idea of buying presents for everyone (almost like I'm obligated to buy em') and I'm not exactly one with money really puts me down.

Thoughts?

My mom has it, she has a special light for it.

In any case, don't "think" you are suffereing from something, get yourself diagnosed by a professional, you could be turning down quite simple or effective treatments.

Not wanting to buy gifts does not mean you have seasonal affective disorder, it means you don't want to spend money.:|

No. I do have mild depression, though, which I can usually get over for a bit if I try my hardest.

Well it goes beyond that. It's like people expect something from everyone and I want to give out presents, it's just I don't have the money. I dunno, it's hard to explain.

Seasonal Affective Disorder? Oh what bull ****. Some people just are Grinches around the holiday season and other arn't. They don't have some sort of disorder or anythuing. Jeez, it seems if someone sees something they don't like or isn't "politically correct" they have to give it a disorder or something.

And just because you're low on cash doesn't mean you have to buy EVERYONE things. And so what, it's the season if GIVING, not the season of "If I don't buy you this you won't be my friend." Just buy soemthing that means a lot to them or you but it cheap, like in the Bible (sry to draw references from here): Jesus said a gift is more valuabe from a person in poverty than a person who has a lot of wealth.

My best friend seems to be like that. Mostly because when it snows, he can't skateboard, and when it's cold, people hang out less and less, so he's bored :?

I do, I have noticed that about myself. Most the time im sad about not being able to afford gifts for the ones I love the most. also lot of bad memories during winter. and everything (in nature) is dead or hybernating. the only time I am happy during the winter is when it snows. And here that only happens once every other year if were lucky.

I hate winter. Who knows? If Jeff was let go during the summer, I might have been as down about as it was at this point.

SAD is a genuine mental disorder. Just because you don't believe in it that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And it has nothing to do with the holidays/spending money. It happens because the sun's ultra violet rays contain vitamin D which has a positive effect on mood. In many places in the winter there is little or no sun, so people with this disorder are affected. It can be countered though by having a vitamin D lamp which you can have in your home usually positioned over your bed so that you absorb the rays while you sleep.
