I'm already making one. I'm doing the character concepts and modeling while a group of students take care of the programming.

Nah. I'm pretty good at coming up with ideas. 8)

hmm.

What will your role be in the design team? You should have knowledge of game art and programming before you get to directing.

I'm not sure how to program or prepare flash animations for a flash-based game.

As far as 2D games go, I've worked on a 2D fighter. The team I was with was using XNA and I did the sprites on Photoshop.

If there's a way you can draw things in photoshop, then import them into flash and draw over that, it'd be useful.

I should probably get a copy of flash so I can practice animation on my free time as well as figure out possible ways to make games out of it. Possibly get into programming. lol.

Lawl, how ironic that I'm procrastinating finishing a Flash game while reading this.:P (I love Flash.:)) As a person who's worked in a team I can't stress this one point enough. SYNCHRONIZE! Have all the art people come up with rough sketches for art styles and work together on one style. Have the coders work together to find a pattern everyone likes. Have the coders and the art people work together so everyone knows what to do and HOW to do it in a way that won't piss other people off. In fact, I'd just flat out expect the first project you work on to fail in many ways since no body is used to how anyone else works. But that's if you actually get a team together. Unless you're shelling out money or plan to also work on many things like coding and art, you're probably not going to get a team together. I don't mean to be rude, but I've taken many college courses and done independent research to learn how to do what I do. If someone walked up to me who didn't know anything about making games and asked me to make a game for them, without offering me anything in return, I'd just laugh at them. But if you still want to try, my advice is to learn how to code. The thing is, if someone who didn't know how to code asked me that, I'd be expecting them to have a player's point of view of games, not a developer's point of view. Nothing hurts more then someone asking for something that would take like 40 hours to code as if it's just going to take 5 mins. "How do you want the background to scroll?" "Hu?" "What kind of scrolling do you want, like give me a game for an example or something." "I don't know, just make the character move. It's not that big of a deal." ":?" It's like going up to an engineer and asking him to make a rocket by having fire come out the bottom and it going up. If I sound bitter I apologize, but it really does suck to work with someone who looks at games from a player's point of view instead of a developer's, trust me.:(

Yes, you can import pics into Flash. Best way to trace pics IMO is to tint the pic white by 50% so what you make shows up better on it.

Have you considered making a game mod? It's much easier, and doesn't require a team with years of programming experience. If you're serious about learning to program though, a good college is your best bet. You could just read all of the appropriate books. But if you go to school, you'll have a degree to fall back on if you decide that developing an entire game is too overwhelming...

I'll look into it - Hero is looking at game stuff atm. I can't go learn about it at college cause I'm joining the police soon and I need to focus on that. Hero wants to get into the games industry - he's so passionate about games I'm sure he'll do fab in it. My best bet is to wait until he gets in and either proposes that game as an idea or gets some gaming mates who can program it in their spare time.

Good mods still take atleast a year and a whole team to develop them, they're smaller than full games but still take alot of time cause everyone is working on it in their spare time. I wouldn't mind making a large scale RTS or tycoon game but the way things are going i can't see it being that popular. I'm more interested in customising PCs, i'ld do much more of it if i had the cash...

I agree. The modding part actually isn't too expensive though.. If you have a dremel, drill, bondo, sandpaper, paint, plexiglass, and various drill bits and accessories, you can do alot. It's the components of the pc hardware that are expensive... Things like video cards, waterblocks, touchscreen LCD's, etc... I do plan on modding my current case though. I still need an Apogee GTZ and some random dremel/drill accessories before I get started...

2D or 3D?

EDIT: It is.

Don't worry about any of that programming stuff, get yourself Gamemaker 7.0. It will handle all of the complex things for you. Why waste precious time coding anyway? I'm making a game engine in Java now and any prgrammer will tell you, easier + faster solution = win.

If you're gonna be making games, it's just so much easier to be able to confront the team face to face. Long distance work is too difficult, you don't have a whole lot of control over what the people are doing. I like your ambitions though, try to find some locals that are good at that stuff that want to work for free, unless you're willing to pay them of course.

If you're gonna be making games, it's just so much easier to be able to confront the team face to face. Long distance work is too difficult, you don't have a whole lot of control over what the people are doing.
