No, that's not cow-on-america... it's a media electronics company. Pretty good stuff.

Creative Zen Sleek

Zune

Both two MP3 players that pwn the hell out of iPods. The Zen is 20gb and doesn't play videos. The Zune is just a bit over your price range, but is 30gb and plays videos.

I've been wondering this as well. I'm in the market for a quality, spacious MP3 player but Apple's apparent mission statement of monopolization, here manifested in the inabilty to transfer a file anywhere else once its been encoded by itunes, has severely detered me from ever choosing an ipod. I'll even overlook a high price if I can just manage my (legally ripped and downloaded) music freely.

you can import mp3s into iTunes, and they stay mp3s... im not sure what you mean by "inability to transfer a file anywhere else once its been encoded by itunes"... because that's definitily not how it works on my PC.

Meh. Sorry, it's late and I'm only going off of vague memory and diminished writing skills. But yeah, I though I read/heard that you had to use Itunes to even transfer MP3s to an ipod, and that because Itunes did some kind of copy protection or something, that you couldn't upload it to a different computer or any other equipment. I guess I'm wrong, as I kind of hoped I was, but even still I've got the short battery life and tinny headphones getting in the way.

The Creative ZEN is good .You can always get a lower capacity one, and buy an SD card to go in it as an extension. It works out a bit cheaper that way.

I have a Zen V plus. I love it, works great, good sound, holds plenty of songs. I think I only paid around $80.00 for it, and that was last year. Creative Zen's website has several different models to choose from.

I'm really enjoying my classic 80gb. I can't say I really tried the competition out a lot. Granted there are a few shortcomings, but it's outweighed by the advantages (I bought mine for just over 250$ about 8 months ago.

There's tons of mp3 players that are better than ipods.

Sansa fuze, cowon d2 or d3, sansa clip, samsung p2 or p3, mpio v10, the list goes on..

My Zen screwed up, i got a Sandisk Sansa Fuze 8GB for $100 and it comes with a microSD slot for even more memory. You can watch photos and video on it as well.

I have a 16gb Samsung P2, it's great. I totally recommend it for people looking for a iTouch alternative, not to mention Samsungs firmware actually adds programs and features.
