Today my phycology teacher was talking about how children learn behaviors and she mentioned that games can very heavily influence children. An example she said was in the new grand theft auto (I assume she meant IV) you can "rape strippers and then blow their heads off". She must have found a secret in the game because I've never seen or heard of that.

But really, I rolled my eyes for that one.

Well to be fair you can do very similar things in that game, and her point wasn't literal accuracy. Hopefully you got her point and didn't just tune her out and roll your eyes :?

You cannot rape in GTA IV. You can have sex with a "Lady of the Evening" in exchange for money but for all intensive purposes the sex is consensual. The argument that video games actually contribute to children acting out these violent acts is an empty one. The fact that I'm not in jail for some sort of heinous crime is my proof.

Everything he see, hear, experience influences us and our subsequent behaviors. Her point that the game (or anything else for that matter) influences children is valid. Her point that is causes violent behavior is false.

while I don't believe video game violence to be the direct cause of really any violence whatsoever, I'm not arguing her case, I'm just pointing out I thought her points she made about what you can do in GTA IV were interesting, being false that is

That's strange. Last year my English teacher said the new Grand Theft Auto (I assume she meant IV) was a fun game that served as good stress relief, but was too similar to the last one.

yeah, he missed it because it isn't even true that that's in the game and that the crime rates show that her speculation is untrue.

I am an angrier person because of video games. I like to beat people up in the street because this 12 year old messed up my 15 killstreak on CoD4. I totally kicked that 12 year old's butt in real life. Take that, Johnny.

rivalries? a couple of football players from my old high school got shot 'cause of the rivalry of the school.

And it causes injuries!

Your teacher is right, children shouldn't be playing GTAIV. That game could influence them to do bad things. It has a freaking M rating for a reason.

I wish people would just stop talking about this crap. Games don't make people violent. Or maybe 1% of people, but those are the ones that already have some problems. Or then they are 8 year old kids who think beating someone up is cool and then they start doing it lol.

Well, GTA might make children violent, but most games won't. GTA is probably the worst in that aspect.

smc91352

What?

Doesn't anyone watch Penn & Teller: Bullsh!t? There is no evidence saying video games make people violent, and the evidence that they actually don't is in the lowered crime rate.

Yes I know. But I also know a guy who played SmackDown vs. Raw when he was a kid. He started making those fight moves on his friends and literally he became a mad dude...

Correct. Anyone who does a crime(such as those tourists stealing a car in Thailand and trying to throw the taxi driver out while it's moving) are mentally disturbed and would've done it anyway with or without GTA IV(or any predecessor). If anything, video games(especially like GTA) have shown to act as a conduit for people to distribute their anger or any homicidal tendencies without doing them in real life.
