Didn't read the whole article, but I thought astronauts learned enough physics to know that vacuum doesn't have a smell. In outer space you don't inhale, vacuum inhales you.

I'm not really sure how they are smelling space, because they are in man made enviroments the whole time (space shuttle, space suit) but I guess I'm just missing something, because I doubt they would lie about soemthing so minimal.

I see all of your points which begs the question, why would they make that up if infact this isn't true?

They've probably just farted in their space suits.

Yes! Someone must have farted on the space shuttle and said, "Wow, space smells weird...." then they put it on the news.

It's probably a result from some process inside of the shuttle.

Their faces are only connected to the rest of their body through a line that connects to the oxygen tanks. O and side note: Liverpool rules.

So is earth if you think about it.
The difference is that earth got an atmosphere and stronger gravity than the moon.

The smell is probably just caused by a chemical reaction that occurs on the surface of the space suits during the transition from the near vacuum of space to the environment aboard the shuttle/ISS. :|

They say they smell it when they come back from space walks.
Therefore the little particles in space stick to the space suits/get into the airlock and are released again in the space station enviroment that they are in. Of course you can smell things without any air. Your nose reacts to little particles and gasses which gives you the smell. Therefore I can see why it would be a strange smell because they would most likely get a whole 'salad' of nanoparticles from space which would stimulate their noses.

There is no air on the moon. Possibly some gasses, but the moons gravity isn't strong enough to hold on to air (or even an atmosphere).

You are correct that being on a planet does not mean you are in space, but the moon is different.

You need air to breathe/smell, this is impossible.

I think you're getting space and outer space confused. Anyway, the article said that they smell gunpowder or ozone. I'm not sure how far up they were or how far up the ozone layer is, but maybe they're smelling this? Or it could just be mental. I get the taste of pretzels whenever I play Devil May Cry, as odd as that sounds 0_o Maybe it's the same sort of deal-e-o?

What I thought was more interesting about that article was that they named the treadmill after Steven Colbert. That man is unstoppable....

The ozone layer is juist a few kilometers above the surface of the Earth. This is why if you go up a few lkilometers the air actually begins getting warmer instead of colder because of the reactions between the ozone and the radiation hitting it.
