My Zune HD bricked (stopped turing on), so I sent it in in exchange for a re-embursement of $189.94 from Square Trade. Now I'm thinking of replacing it with either an Apple iPod Touch 4G 32GB ($272.00) or a Samsung Galaxy Player (4.0" $190.00, 4.6" $200). Which one should I get?

  • Apple iPod Touch 4G 32GB
  • Samsung Galaxy Player

I can understand buying one of those iPods with 120 GB hard drives because they can hold most people's entire mp3 libraries, but those 32 GB/SD-based iPods or MP3 players seem pointless to me. Just buy a 32 GB SD card, copy some of your mp3 on it, slide it inside your phone (it doesn't even have to be the greatest smartphone ever) and rock out.

I already have a pre-paid phone (it's good enough for me). Anyhow, I'm leaning toward the Samsung Galaxy (it has expandible memory).

I used to have that same model itouch, and it was great. I simply sold it because well, I just felt like it. They hold their price fairly well. I think I paid 279, and I sold it for 230.

I personally don't like that simply because SD memory is soooo slow compared to flash, but that's what I'm doin' as well. Just using my smartphone synced with amazon mp3/Google play.

Never understood why people want OT to make their decisions. Anyway......not an Apple fan though I have an iPod Touch....but I doubt I'd buy another.

Both are great devices.

What you need to do is decide this:

Do you like using iTunes? Or do you like using Kies.

I don't think they produce them anymore, but they still support the software?

The Zune HD is a nice device, but Microsoft stop manufacturing it because it couldn't compete with the iPod Touch. Also, I had it for 1.5 years, so I feel like getting something else now (something more capable).

Both are good players, I guess it depends if you use iTunes, as you pretty much need it for the idevices. If you plan on using it just for music then they will both do well, but if you want apps then the iTunes app store is better. The only thing that would make me lean towards the galaxy is that it leaves you with $72-82 to spend on better headphones, but that depends if you have some already. Generally the earphones that come with these devices are pretty poor.

iTunes is irritating because it occasionally deletes playlists.

DUDE - I was wondering what was up with that!

I have made a few playlists right on my iPhone and every couple days, it disappears!

I thought I had a bad iPhone or something. Now I'm thinking it's a bug.

It's not a big deal all-in-all, since the songs are still on the device. It's just that the playlists I make randomly disappear for no reason.

I can't speak from experience about the SGP, but I have the ipod touch 4G (though mine is the 32GB) and I consider it to be worth every penny. The apps are great, it holds all of my music, books, etc. Now I don't use it for movies/videos all that much aside from youtube, and when I go walking I still take my ipod nano with me just due to size and the click wheel.

My girlfriend has the 8GB and she has mentioned that she wishes it had more memory so maybe the SGP is the way to go for you.

I'd wait. Maybe they'll introduce an upgrade to the ipod touch when they unveil the new iphone this fall (early fall).

Frankly, it boils down to this: iOS or Android and by extention, iTunes or Windows Explorer (drag and drop)?

Wait and see if they come out with an iPod Touch 5G in September. The 4G is two years old now.

Just get a tablet (Nexus 7) if you are going to purchase an ipod touch. If you need an mp3 player for other uses there are much better and cheaper options out there currently.

They do. It's also compatible with Windows Phone if you have it. I unfortunately lost my Zune HD, but I still have the software going on my laptop.

I dread of syncing on itunes.

This is why I got foobar2000 + addons to work with iphone. Made life so much easier, loads right away, and never freezes when I skip 100x songs at once.

My Galaxy Player 5.0 arrived yesterday via UPS. I don't regret the decision I made. Its large screen is simply amazing; it makes browsing the Internet and watching videos all the more enjoyable. Also, the fact that the memory can be expanded by an additional 32GB via its SD Memory card slot is great. I will admit that the OLED screen of my Zune HD produced more vibrant colors, but that's only a slight trade off. All of the pros of the Galaxy Player 5.0 outweigh its cons. On a side note, the form factor of this device is very, very similar to that of an iPod Touch; it pretty much looks like a supersized iPod Touch. :P

Is that the first gen or the latest model?

I thought these things were wayy too big to be portable comfortably feels a bit intruding, imo. My ideal portable screen size would be like 4 inches, but I guess that depends on the person.

Yes, this is the latest model. Even though it's bigger than an iPod Touch, it's still isn't too big (in my opinion). It fits into my pocket easily and doesn't feel too large in my hand. It's a pretty nifty device. There are two smaller versions, a 3.2" version and a 4" version.

The iPod Touch, if mostly for its app selection. Though as mentioned, if you can, wait a few months, the current revision is coming up on two years and scheduled for a reboot along with the iPhone 5 this fall. iPods generally get refreshed in September if I remember correctly.

Cost. It's way cheaper to have a dumb phone with a pay as you go or cheap plan along with a Touch or similar device.

It's about 1/3" thick. You can see it here.
