Coming in the wake of protests which forced President Ben Ali and his appointed successor to flee Tunisia, and a vote in the independence movement of southern Sudan, protests have broken out across Egypt against President Hosni Mubarak.

Where will the revolution end? Which country will be next? Will Robespierre and the Jacobins win out, or will cooler heads prevail?

I'm Egyptian and this stuff has been going on for awhile. Lots of discrimination towards Christians as well. Everyone wants the president (Hosni Mubarak) out, including myself.

How are you posting if the internet and SMS messaging has been shut down? I just saw a news report on this and a protest organizer has stated that it is now difficult to organize protests because of it.

I live in Canada. I've been trying to contact family both by phone and the internet in Cairo and other cities, no response yet. I'm really worried.

He's one of those presidents who try to present the government as democratic when he has been rigging the elections for 30 years. So even if he didn't win, he would still be in power.

No president should be in power for almost 30 years, especially if he's (apparently) a very bad one.

He is not really a president.. He is a dictator.. He controls all power and pretty much can take away power from the house any time he feels like it... Though he hasn't.

To be honest I'm not pleased with this at all. Despite the many many shortcoming of Mubarak and his administration, but they are still a reliable ally to us the Palestinians and the US to an extent. The problem with these protests is that they are being by the F***ing members of Islamic brotherhood party. No matter how you look at it, Egypt and Egyptians are better without the Islamic brotherhood. Please let's not repeat the Palestinians' mistake in 2005(2006? I forgot) when they "got fed up" with the PNA corruption and you know who came to power.

let's not come up with things. Christians are not being discriminated against, period. Are there people in Egypt who do? certainly. Is it a wide scale phenomenon? certainly not.

The Egyptian Brotherhood renounced violence years ago, but its relative moderation has made it the target of extreme vilification by more radical Islamists. Al Qaeda's leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman Zawahiri, started their political lives affiliated with the Brotherhood but both have denounced it for decades as too soft and a cat's paw of Mubarak and America.

Egypt's new opposition leader, former International Atomic Energy Agency head Mohamed ElBaradei, has formed a loose alliance with the Brotherhood because he knows it is the only opposition group that can mobilize masses of Egyptians, especially the poor. He says he can work with it to change Egypt. Many scholars of political Islam also judge the Brotherhood is the most reasonable face of Islamic politics in the Arab world today. Skeptics fear ElBaradei will be swept along by more radical forces.

Israel, of course, isn't looked on favorably by the Brotherhood:

The most problematic issue between the Ikhwan and America will be Israel. The Brotherhood raised an army to fight Israel in its war of independence in 1948. Its Palestinian branch was the nucleus for Hamas, and the Brotherhood retains links to the rulers of Gaza. The Ikhwan's leaders understand the peace treaty with Israel is the cornerstone of modern Egyptian foreign policy and underwrites America's $2 billion annual aid as well as the lucrative tourist trade, but they are very critical of Israel, its leader, and policies. Their base is fundamentally opposed to any Egyptian cooperation with Israel.

Take a look at some pictures from the protests.

The Guardian's live updates are great too.

I don't know why you showing me this. I know them well, not through articles and news. They are cunning to no extent, I don't want to say more on the Internet, it may be dangerous for me. The Islamic brotherhood is very manipulating and relies heavily on the masses and their stupidity and emotions. Again can't say more.

Good. It will at least have muslims in Europe shift their attention to their own matters, rather than European matters of which don't concern them =]

I don't expect you to care, not do I want you. What you said is totally and utterly irrelevant and demonstrate how poor your knowledge of the matter is. So if you don't know about something, is it really necessary to say such irrelevant and "cold" thing? I'm not trying to be offensive but I want you to get the point.

My point is literally that I find this to be a good thing that's happening. That's all. I don't know how else to spell that out. Perhaps if I wrote it in arabic, but unfortunately I don't know how to do that so you're out of luck. I don't intend to come across as cold, but that's how I am. I've heard enough about this arab rage on the news.

Egypt? Secular? 90% of the population in Egypt identifies with Islam. They're somewhat more secular than other arab nations but not too much.

And I find it relevant to me because Muslims living in the continent where I am will be interested in this more than their influence in Europe =]

Egypt is quite secular and open. Aside from homosexuality, everything else is available. Since this issue is driven by something nonreligious, I still see it irrelevant. Hell, they already know this and that is why they immigrated in the first place.

Asbolutely correct, it is a non-religious situation, but it'll be paid attention to by religious practicing muslims where I live. I'll give you an example.

Last time muslims made it in the news here, they were kicking up a stink about the 5am call to prayer being banned in populous areas. Tonight they were on the news and they were raging about something that pertained to something in their own peoples and culture, and not ours. That is welcome change to me.

There have been reports that parts of the army may be siding with the protesters. The guardian reports they were seen shaking hands with protesters and there have also been reports of clashes between police and army forces.

Egypt is not Tunisia. Egypt is a major player in the middle east and the Palestinians' best ally. IF Egypt fell in the hands of Islamic brotherhood or plain chaos, the region and the Palestinian case are history.
