Are certain World War 2-based video games banned in both Germany and Japan?

I mean specifically those games that involve fighting against the Germans or the Japanese ( Such as some of the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games )

I'm just curious, people.

Just imagine this scenario: imagine you're Japanese or German: Don't you think it would feel uncomfortable to fight the army of your nation? Just think of that...

Well, I know that they're censored in Germany. Wolfenstein games, for example, had to replace Nazis with cyborgs or a nondescript "regime" in the German version. Swastikas are also out.

As for Japan, I don't know. Tried a quick look-up, and it doesn't look like they do much censorship, aside from pornography.

Used to be a lot of censorship for games in general in Germany but that has been relaxed a lot. Don't think any WW2 games are outright banned in either country.

So video games which don't fall under artistic merit like movies do can't have those symbols.

Sort of. To @vagrantsnow's point Germany didn't outright ban many games but rather they banned Nazi iconography and imagery but this wasn't exclusive to games. As mentioned, this has been relaxed lately:

This ban wasn't specific to video games but extended to all media and it went into effect during the Cold War. It was never about banning video games where the bad guys happen to be German, but honestly Nazis are kind of a specific group of people that most everyone agrees were the baddies. This includes most of Germany, hence the ban.

As for Japan, they don't ban a ton of games but when they do it's typically about violence more than anything else. The only exceptions related to WW2 I know of weren't WW2 games but games that dealt with nuclear weaponry. One famous example was in Fallout 3, the ability to nuke Megaton city as a side quest (evil, obviously) was removed from the Japanese version of the game. Also, it's worth noting that most WW2 games are shooters and shooters are far less popular in Japan.
