I'm doing my 3rd year dissertation on lonliness and internet usage, and it's got me thinking about a lot of things and I just wondered what OT's take on it is.

Are internet friends "real" friends?

Do we need actual physically meet with a person in order for them to count as a friend, or can we assume anyone we have regular contact with online who we get along with is a friend? For me, I have a Facebook and a MySpace but I never add anyone (beside bands) who I've never met in person. Same goes for my Xfire and Steam accounts.

Thoughts?

They're not to me.

Sorry guys. :(

And a dissertation on 'loneliness and internet usage'? Oh God, you couldn't have picked a better place to come for that.

I would have to say that sometimes online friendships can be just as satisfying as real life ones, but on a whole, no. They dont really count.

Some person added me on MSN.I got to talking and we had a great conversation. If I probably meet them face to face I would have no problem. So I guess it depends on whether you count them as friends or not.

I wouldn't say that they provide anywhere near what you get from real-life interactions with people, but I'd say it's better than nothing. I have a few people I've known for years without ever actually meeting them in person, and I don't think it'd be a stretch to call them friends.

I agree with that. Most people you meet here probably won't be "friends" but if you speak to them often for a long period of time, it can't be too far from real friends

I would consider them as ''friends''. It is if you have much in common. And it would be a little akward to meet them later IRL but it will go along i am sure of that. :) I have a friend i met on WoW and have been talking to him for like 4 years and he might come to vist my country in summer.

I'd say a real friend is someone you can call up that will hang out with you the next day (unless there's an emergency.)

Nah, not really. You can meet friends on the internet, but if you have never seen the person in real life, I don't think it's the same. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world on the internet, but somehow they will never mean the same to me, as my real life friends.

I guess it depends on how you define friend. If you define friend as a person you hang out with or talk to on a fairly regular basis, then you could call internet friends, well... friends.

I'd might call them friends but they won't be able to get to the level of a good friend.

I wouldn;t call them friends exactly... although I know some people over the internet who, if I had met them in real life we maybe would have become friends...

It doesn't matter where they come from as long as they're a friend.

The one difference is that online you only have "first tier" friends. In real life you have to have the "crap, ok I'll put up with you" friends and when you hang out with your REAL friends they tag along and you don't kick them out.

Online you just stick with the first tier ones, you don't need to deal with the stragglers.

I think some can be. I mean what if you move away from your friends. You still talk to them on a regular basis, but you don't physically see each other anymore, and you can still be considered friends, so why not the same thing for the internet?

My friends list says 66.

About 15 of those people I consider real friends. They actually cheered me up when I was down.

I believe so. I often think to myself, would I hang out with my 'friends' on GS if this was real life, and would we have conversations like we do here (Or on MSN, AIM, etc.). I came to the conclusion that yes, we would. Therefor, I say yes.

Not really. Depending on how long you've known them, and how much you have spoken to them. I can only consider one person i've met over the net an actual " friend. " Known him for like..5 years.

I can't speak to someone for a while and then not care about them. It's not like they're a figment of my imagination but I think others have felt that way about me in the past. I'm reluctant to ever make good friends over the Internet now... but that said, I never feel as though people care about me as I do them in the real world... meh.

no, i wouldn't count online friends as real friends. i found a lot that i only talk to on video games.

some people r just good and find good friends online from chatting with them.

I would say yes...to some extent.

They're friends swaying more to aquaintances rather than what some call "best-friends"

But I would still say friends =]

People call God a friend, has anyone alive met him?

of course they can be...it depends on how honest you choose to be with each other.....I have one incredibly clsoe friend that I met through GS....sure we did eventually meet.......but if you're both honest with each other there is no reason you can;t be "real" friends.....
