Probably 90% of bands perform terrible. The hardest thing is to find a vocalist that can actually do what he has done on the record. The only bands I thnk perform good Muse (Probably the best one I've seen) Tool - before maynard lost his vocal range. Although it's still better than most bands. Soundgarden - Good enough Karnivool Porcupine Tree Terrible ones - The Mars Volta ( cedrix sucks so bad usually) Deftones 30 seconds to mars Marilyn Manson foo fighters red hot chilli peppers ( anthony sucks live) I didn't even bother including rappers at all. 99% of them need a hype man, which is ridiculous since they're technically just talking. Most of them don't even change tones. The only good rapper I've seen that can perform good live is Lupe.

Killswitch Engaged was great live when they had Howard doing the vocals. That man has an AMAZING voice!

Static-X and Ozzy were both great during Ozzfest in 2007.

Some bands are better experienced live too, like The Casualties and GWAR.

Anaal Nathrakh sound almost the same live as they do in studio, which is interesting because on their albums all the instruments are only record by two guys and they use a drum machine. I was surprised when I bought their first album "The Codex Necro" and didn't realize that the bonus tracks were recorded live.

Maybe he just, you know, is a fan of metal and likes music that's fast, intense, agressive and heavy because that's what metal typically is known for being? Just sayin'.....

Growling is one of the most annoying things ever invented in music. People who do that are as talented as kim kardashian. As far as the instruments , some of it I like, but usually the ones I like will be saturated with the most unbearable growlings.

LOL, Opeth is really the only growler I like and some other avant garde bands. I just find it that many of them, if not all, sound the same.

Glad you mentioned Porcupine Tree so I don't have to. Steven Wilson sings totally different live, but he's still great and the rest of the bad is basically flawless live.

Ah yes, The Dead Kennedy's were the ****! God I wish I could have seen them live back in the day!

One of my fav tracks is one where the only recording of it is a LIVE recording. The story behind it is pretty awesome too!

Singing is for lames anyway.

There's plenty of bands that can perform live what they do on the album. Many overproduced acts on big labels tend to fall short though. Then again 90% of those bands are garbage, and honestly a bit rougher sound is preferable live anyway. Gives the performance some legitimacy.

Tombs is a band that sticks out as being significantly better live than they are on their albums. Many harder punk bands and brutal death bands are too because of the show atmosphere.

NOFX, Anti-Flag, Pennywise, Rancid.. alot of punk bands do because they don't concern themselves with Studio Sounds, where as a lot of bands write songs in a studio and record something that's hard to reproduce outside of a studio.

Slipknot and Bon Jovi are two bands that sounded exactly the same to me. My parents saw Kiss and said they sounded nothing like their records but it was one of the best concerts they've ever seen.

The key to rush's success of sounding like they do on their albums live is, they set the bar really low.
