I notice over the years I'm very nostalgic for certain years in my life and music videos I watched growing up. For me I miss the 90's so much not the school part but the over all vibe to me it was my favorite decade of music and certain TV shows like watching Seinfeld on Thursday nights. Nostalgia can get depressing though because you can never go back to those years and it hurts I crave those times so bad life was easier. So are you a nostalgic person? and if so what are you nostalgic for? I miss these things the most

  • 90's grunge music and gangsta rap.
  • Mid 00's PC gaming AAA exclusives like BF2, and F.E.A.R.
  • Smoking up listening to the Grateful Dead for the first time.
  • Old school stores like Blockbuster video and Circuit City.
  • Watching the Monday night wars WWF VS WCW.
  • Hanging out with parts of my family before they became backstabbers.
  • Going to the Arcades in the 90's and playing Mortal Kombat 2 and later 3.
  • Being excited for Christmas when I was a kid and early teen.

There is so much more but this is just a small list.

Definitely. Big fan of 90’s rap /r&b and pop music. Also really enjoyed early 2000’s consoles and gaming in general.

I am for the most parts, especially in video games nostalgic for that matter. I too miss the 90's so much, their are times I'll slip back into watching cartoons, music, & video games for the nostalgic feel.

  • Rock music from the 90's & some hip-hop like Tupac.
  • Going to Blackbusters in the 90's renting video games & few movies.
  • WWF/WCW 90's.
  • The Arcade era was something you can spend time with friends after school.
  • Going Halloween was so much fun.
  • Video game magazines was the coolest thing before the rise of internet/social media.
  • The SNES/Sega Genesis consoles were an amazing games in the 90's.

I didn't get into PC gaming until Crysis launch in 2007 but I did play Half-Life back in 1999 & Wing Commander.

I try not to be. I consider nostalgia to be a form of delusional utopianism. Are there things in the past that I like and hold sentimental values for? Plenty. But I try to be objective about their flaws, balance it out by understanding new stuff, and appreciate them for their own merits. For one example, I play both old and new video games, but would never say; "gaming was better back in the day," and acknowledge flaws and merits of both.

For another example, the primary reason I'm still in these forums is because I grew up posting in forums and feel the most comfortable there, but I also like the more relaxed pace and smaller discussion groups. I don't have a social media account (unless YouTube counts, and I don't upload any videos or post any comments), but I do see the appeal, and there are a few Twitter accounts I follow - the old fashioned way - and I'm quite up to date with the latest memes and trends - except Facebook, because I find Facebook's UI to be messy and their registration nag to be annoying. That said, I also delve into them with a heart full of "comedic cynicism" and a well-powered "Gellar Field," if you know what I'm saying. "Chuckle and ignore" is my modus operandi.

Yup. Mostly for the 92-94 era, my last years of High School. Some things I miss:

  • Young womens fashion. Loved those mini tube skirts that were the rage.
  • Early Fox TV. Married with Children, In Living Color, GOOD Simpsons episodes, X-Files, etc.
  • Afternoon Cartoons (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Batman, etc.)
  • Punk (Dead Milkmen, Dead Kennedies, Black Flag, etc.)
  • SNES vs Genesis, none of this 'it's all the same under the hood' multiplat BS.
  • Being unable to be contacted when away from home
  • Company you had over was talking/doing things with you, not with their faces bowed into their cell phones

Very. UKGold, GOG and TCM are go to's.

Playing Resident Evil 2 or Halflife gives you a warm fuzzy feeling can't really emulate in newer titles.

Likewise, there really aren't movies like Robocop any-more. The closest being Dredd,.

Being a kid and growing up with this stuff was a blessing.

Yeah, for somethings. Specifically video games, and TV shows. I definitely think about how I use to watch Nickelodeon all day and get hype about Rugrats marathons. Then veg out on N64 all night. I also still get really nostalgic about CoD 4. I honestly believe it is the greatest multiplayer game of my time and it came out at a time when I was just discovering online gaming along with a lot of other gamers. Will probably never experience a gaming phenomenon like that again.....

Yeah I don't like being nostalgic it gets super depressing at times if there was a pill to get rid if it I would take it. I hope in the future I can move on from thinking about the good ole days but for now it's more of comfort feeling sometimes.

Agree I love Dredd such a underrated movie they are making a new Robocop movie next year that seems to be in line with the original movie so maybe it can bring back some of the elements that made the first movie special. https://www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/robocop/270425/robocop-returns-new-sequel-to-be-directed-by-neill-blomkamp

The thing is, Robocop doesn't need remade. It's legitimately, almost perfect.

True but the 2019 version isn't a remake. It's a sequel to the original movie their making a different version of RC2 so that's kinda of cool. The second movie was ok but that kid in that movie annoyed the hell out of me so much that I really couldn't enjoy the movie.

The ending to Robocop was pretty conclusive though. The idea is a retelling of the bible, where Satan is corporations, Jesus is a law abiding officer and the Romans are basically Clarence Boddicker and chums, which also doubles up as a Western.

Final scene where he's asked his name and thus, fully resurrect is bam, done. Perfect. No 30 minute Christopher Nolan explanation.

-

Robocop 2 itself wasn't bad. Like Preadator 2 it's decent if un-necessary sequel. The scenes with Cain were terrifying, especially the factory sequence where they tease rather than show. And it has some comedic gold moments. The scene with the kid where he's forced to watch a man tortured to death (guy sliced open), and eventually left dying was abit much, even by Robocop standards.

There are things I miss about the past, including the 90's. But as was pointed out, things have also gotten better than they were back then in many ways.

I think what we miss most is the inability to go back and experience things again, either to do things differently or just to relish in that feeling once more, just as we did that first time. We miss the time we can't get back to. But maybe that makes those memories all the more wonderful and creates personal revelations for us.

I already miss certain moments from the past few years. But I guess things were always going to end up this way.

Some people like a time period so much they keep that style forever. A 45 year old guy now might have really liked the 90's when he was about 25 or something and keep a shoulder length hair cut and trench coat. I find that a bit weird. You've got to move with the times a bit. Like an old actor. You got to have the latest cut of suit if your gonna look stylish. Which I think is quite important.

Nostalgia is a human trait which everyone possesses naturally. But it's important to not dismiss current trends because the world changes and you will end up looking silly if you don't keep up to date.

At then end of the day 80's, 90's and to a lesser extent 70's styles were really bad. I know I'm talking about fasion here but hear me out. They may have been good at the time. But you're sugar coating it to idealise an entire time period. Every moment is a new emotion. Friends can be cruel. Sometimes you win big and you're on top.

But time periods are only fasions and I certainly don't miss alot of the crap that was on tv.

As usual the media empire devoured itself under a pile of garbage and crappy output and it was all dumped at the end in landfills of Ed the Duck and PJ and Duncan CD singles.

But everything has to be put into context. Media is an example of social movements and ways to reflect upon ourselves and fasion is a response to that human desire.

So a type of game is fasionable now because we grew bored of what came before and tried something new. Some of it is good and some bad.

It's been said the industry consumes itself time and again but it is at least trying new things and when ideas become stale the market stagnates and changes again to fit where we are as a race.

In a way the western economic model is the perfect model as far as consumerism is concerned as the disposable age marries neatly into novelty and rapidly changing societal influences through media channels or population that have access to them.

At the end of the day. The 90's was a very superficial period, characterised by a clean cut image and slick presentation.

At this point it is becoming a bit tired and as far as generations go I wouldn't refer to media influences as a significant factor.

Wow well said!!! but I still can't get over the 90's though I prefer the no smartphones and no social media era. I still love the music from that decade as well. The 90's where superficial no doubt but I feel it's much worst now with this selfie generation we live in.

Being nostalgic is very common, as they have brought back various tv shows/games/movies/toys/ ect. How can one get away from it, its like the new age has nothing to offer. They have brought back everything. My Transformer days of playing with them in the sand has become a huge franchise now. Old classic games like PacMan, Donkey Kong, are now in movies like the new Adam Sandler one. Old Games like Resident Evil are huge right now, you can't shake them off. Nostalgia we can't budge from, and i luv it. Its great to see all of it in up to date action

If you're all up into fashion and social ladders or have a front-facing job, sure. If I want to rock a look, I go for the 20's gangster bowling-hat style. The ladies love it.

My old flannel, ripped jeans and sandals say otherwise. The 90's for me was the hippie-resurgence: The Beatles, The Doors, LSD, bonfires, acoustic guitars, cliff jumping and wild girls.

Oh, and Lollapalooza. Back when it mattered.

Not really. I mean there's plenty of old stuff that I remember and continue to enjoy but I generally don't get the feeling of nostalgia. Nothing to really gain from dwelling on the past.

Well. The 70's and 80's had punk and in the 90's grunge was considered 'alternative' which means slightly less mainstream as in, second most popular. When Kurt Cobain mugged around on The Word with Mark Lammar he was actually wearing very clean clothes and looked fairy neat and tidy really. Quite tame compared to Alice Cooper and his camp rock or Keith Richard's decadence. It was very Breakfast Club teenage introspection.

Keith from the prodigy and his techno-punk was the more raw and wild style.

Alternative was dead by '93. What came after was just grunge and grunge influenced rock. Not the same. Don't know why they kept the alt label. This is alternative:

People remember the grunge but forget the hippie resurgence. The hippie stuff was dead by the time it started getting commercialized, though (Spin Doctors, etc.), but the psychedelic scene hung on for a few more years before merging with the Rave scene and going all designer.

But from 90 till about 95, retro was a pretty happening scene. This was totally separate from the grunge movement which to us was just commercialized and soulless sell-outs.

In my part of the world, grunge didn't catch on until after Cobain blew himself away. The Beatles, The Doors, Joplin, Hendrix et al. were seeing a resurgence in popularity with the new hippie movement. Alongside and separate from this were the Hip Hop scene, the last of the Glam Rockers, and that adult contemporary crap like Bette Midler. Oh, and (ugh) Country.

So yeah, don't judge us by grunge. That was mostly a west thing. The Seattle sound.

@br0kenrabbit: I think the hippy resurgence turned into the brit pop garage band sound in the 90's which was cool but when I was about 16 I got into drum'n'bass which is far edgier, as far as I'm concerned. Desertstorm were early drum'n'bass innovators and Ganja Crew with their super sharp shooters single seemed like the future to me.

Biggups to Metalheadz crew and Dillinja, Lemon Jelly, Moby and LTJ Bukem! Brrap!

I graduated in 94 and was in college by 95, so I was pretty much out of the scene at that point. When I checked in with music a few years later it sucked. Everybody had cleaned up, sobered up and sold out. The late 90's were nothing like the early 90's. Disappoint.

Brrap!

Method Man - Release Yo' Delf [Prodigy Remix] - 1994

I graduated in 94 and was in college by 95, so I was pretty much out of the scene at that point. When I checked in with music a few years later it sucked. Everybody had cleaned up, sobered up and sold out. The late 90's were nothing like the early 90's. Disappoint.

Exactly Boybands and Britany Spears took over and Nu Metal mainstream music has been garbage ever since.

*cringe* Yup.

Music went in all kinds of directions in the early 90's. Not all of it was good but at least there was an exploration of sound of sorts. By the end of the decade, it was all bubble gum pop.

Not really. I just take my old favorite stuff (mp3 music, movies, etc) with me. The rest can rot.

Yes, only because there were a lot more epic during those times. Music of the 90s vs music today? Yeah

@warmblur: Not...at...all.

Nostalgia mentally ages you.

It’s why old people say there has been no good movies, music, videogames, whatever in 30 years.

I work with a couple devs my age and it’s all Nirvana and Pearl Jam all day. The younger developers refer to them as “peaked in high school guys”. It’s kinda sad.

To the OP... Yes, just mainly high school memories. But other things bring nostalgia such as food and previous locations. I would say I'm a nostalgic person because I do regularly look back at the memories and just wonder. I think nostalgia can be a great thing because it can teach one to accept the way things are now. Because a few decades from now, whatever is going on now may be nostalgic in the future.

To Baconstrip78... Yeah those people who regularly listen to the songs that were 'hot' while they were 'young-and-reckless' I guess it brings them back. It will be like listening to 3LAU in 2060. There are definitely people out there who are in their 40s, 50s who don't need to listen to certain songs to bring them back (but they probably can't help it if they come across it) and they happen to still seem upbeat and in the moment and up-to-date with everything despite being twice the age of some people like Kylie Jenner.

It reminds me of the story of a single girl on Valentine's Day. She listened to a 90s boyband song. And she only listened to it one time. The lesson here is that you can still listen to songs that bring you back, but don't over do it and put it on repeat for hours.

somewhat. I'm a gen z kid so there's that

You don't know what it's like to go outside and have that be your social hub with a ton of cool activities with awesome friends.

Now your friends think about themselves and use every moment you are with them to create a status for themselves on social media for clicks.

Like how the gen Z-Zoomers say it, oof!

Definitely. I was born in 1987, and I can tell you the 80's and 90's were better.

Better TV shows, movies and music. The 80's had the best movies. The 90's had great TV shows and cartoons. WWF and WCW was part of it.

Most TV shows today suck. My family and I always watch the older stuff, because the new shows today are not very good.

I don't even consider this opinion. I remember the 90's, and the entertainment was a lot better, period. Shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps came on. Saturday morning cartoons came on. The country was also better in a lot of ways. People spent more time together and went outside more. Internet was not widespread in the mid 90's. Going to Blockbuster or Hollywood Video was common.

So yeah, I am definitely a nostalgic person. I know first-hand this was a better time. Anything that brings back these great memories wins. It's not just for the entertainment. Like I said, the country was a better place back than. So this goes way deeper than entertainment. This includes my memories of the country being a better place to live.

Kind of. What's interesting is how certain smells trigger nostalgia so effectively. I have a bottle of aftershave from ten years ago. Totally forgot about it. One smell and I feel like I'm in another place.

@warmblur: I'm not just nostalgic, but outright melancholic more often than not. My childhood that involved taking yearly trips to the big city from the small one and the wonders during the trip and at the city, my great grandparents home in the nearby town that relatively recently got demolished for new houses to be built in the lot that used to have the house, a depot, a shed and a miniature forest in the back, my grandparents that would come to stay there during the summer(one of which died sometime ago) and often we would go and stay for a week or so ourselves. My other grandparents that lived in the small city with us(of which again one has died while one is living with dementia and my parents have to look after him), and of course the 90s games, Jazz jackrabbit, commander keen, falcon 3.0, nascar racing, overdrive and many more used to steal time from playing with actual toys.

The worst part is that I feel nostalgic for decades and places that I haven't even lived. I get a sense of dread when I think about how everything moves and never stays the same. That shop owner who retired and closed down his shop after many years being part of your childhood, the shops, houses and people that used to be and now they're not. I think I am a little messed up.

I actually prize games that evoke that feel of nostalgia. Case and point simcity 3000. In 98 when I got to play it, I was but a wee lad and It was that time of my childhood before everything started to stop and change. The trips to Athens to our grandparents, my great grandparents house in the town. Simcity 3000 really evokes the feel of those times.

My coworker alway talk about guy she in love with and do not understand how he not nostalgic at all. He say it do not exist. She assume a lot though this is also something I try explain to her.

Me not very nostalgic person but I do like thing that remain good. For example good game is good game. People do not alway play chess or Mario kart on older system for nostalgia they can play because it good game period.

Man I feel ya I'm super nostalgic for southern California I never been there I feel like I was born in the wrong state. Nostalgic can be so painful at times I feel like crying but I can't I'm so numb inside and feel like shit I hate it. I would do anything to go back to the 90's when I was younger and didn't have health issues I dream about it depression is a bitch.
