Recently went to france and noticed their programming is like 85% american. they have all the shows we have but dubbed in french. its the same when I was in canada, except about 95% of their programming is american. i'm assuming its the same everywhere else, where american media dominates everything. I watched this documentary today called raindeer spotting which centers around some finnish youth, and i found it a little disturbing how all they watched was american programming, listened to american music, wore american brands, and even tried to speak to eachother in english slang at times. You realize how progammed everyone is by the american way of life

I'm concerned about still having Friends and Seinfeld reruns comprise like a third of my viewing time. Other than that, not so much.

Well entertainment wise, America is certainly the most influential, and it's been that way for a while. It's not disturbing at all, and I think the world would be a much better place if we all had more similar cultures.

Honestly, there's some truth to this. America might have a higher percentage of numb people with short attention spans (well, not that much higher), but it produces some of the most engaging and effective entertainment for exactly that reason. Because Western culture is so influenced by entertainment, American influence ends up permeating all of the Western world.

So if you don't like it, tell everybody else to step their game up.

That's because Eurpean entertainment is garbage by default. I tried watching the UK Office on Hulu and realized how crap it was. And thats odd, because when Ricky does his standups here in the US, I find them quite funny and smart.

When I visited the Philippines, I was quite annoyed at all the plastic, fake bleached skinned Filipinos you saw on TV. I kept wondering, where are the real Filipinos, the ones that work there ass off to stay alive?

The US didn't copy anything..I don't know what part of that you don't understand. The UK Office's producer Ricky Gervias made the US version. And, as always, the US version became more popular and has better ratings than the boring, and dull UK version.

A lot of the time that's a good thing as other nations don't fund large TV series due to the small economy. You'ld never get something like 24 being made in the UK.

Eh? It was produced over there by the same people. Also all these direct copies you see where they keep the same title like "got talent" and "pop idol" are licensed to the Americans (plus plenty of other countries), they are sold to them not ripped off.

In the UK we have most of our own programming if you count the main 5 channels. When you add the satellite and cable channels however it is mostly american shows. I guess you just produce the vast majority of TV shows and it is much cheaper to import these than develop your own.

His personal opinion obviously doesn't matter in the business dealings of executive producers. Ricky went to the US producers and said that he made a successful show in the UK and wanted to try and make a version for the US.

So the u.s. looks for bad shows and then pays for a US version? Does that seem likely to you? I doubt your guess is educated.

What planet are you from? Have you ever been to school? "The U.S." doesn't just make shows. There is an industry. It's a business with individual players. The fact is that the U.K. version sucked, so the same producer tried it with American actors who were actually funny, and a slightly different premise, and it became a hit in both countries. Nobody copied anything.

Can you both stop arguing about the office. Can we both just agree that no matter where you are, while watching the office , you're thinking about watching something else on TV.

Ok, I'm going to attempt to explain it in a matter you can understand. *Ahem* Ricky Wicky Gervias came to the US in a yellow boat wearing a rain poncho. He went to the magical building known as NBC! :O And he told the masters "hey! I want to produce an American Office". In the end, The US didnt ask for the Office. Because the US doesnt sit down on a table and hold a competition to find the next Top UK TV show to americanize and make it actually funny. k?

So the office was a top UK show?

I would disagree that it's more entertaining. I would say that the show has been made for a wider audience, with less complexity in the humour.

I wasn't replying to you, you should be able to read the names of posters in the quote bit. It's not complicated. If you feel the need to 'put me in my place' at least try to keep your comments in reply to mine :)

I'm Canadian, and all my favourite movies and TV shows are American. Star Wars, Star Gate, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, Star Trek, Family Guy, The Simpsons. Maybe other countries just need to start making better shows.

Don't you mock my panda! I don't expect you to like u.k. comedy shows, but you could at least know your facts as to where shows start and to where they get the inspiration. You can't really argue without the basic knowledge.

If you look back, you can see that I knew the origin of the UK and US Office. You didnt, hence why you kept asking so many questions and arguing nothing. You did state that the "US" copied the Office. I dont know why you even kept replying after that.

THe US did copy the office? The producer made a US version after the UK version, why are you not getting it?

If the UK version of the office was the original then the US was a ...... ?

[QUOTE="Zensem"] If you look back, you can see that I knew the origin of the UK and US Office. You didnt, hence why you kept asking so many questions and arguing nothing. You did state that the "US" copied the Office. I dont know why you even kept replying after that. Zensem

THe US did copy the office? The producer made a US version after the UK version, why are you not getting it?

Not so with TV in Britain... We get some American programs and channels but it's more culturally directed towards us here. I find that american TV tends to drive me crazy bored. The wannabe gangsta trend has made it over in all of it's repulsive glory though..

Nothing on U.S. tv can match Dr. Who in my opinion, althought I do love u.s. shows.

In some cases, yes. I find it very annoying and undesirable that a lot of non-American works of entertainment have to get butchered and altered so radically to appeal to the American audience, and there have been cases where the Americanizer (if that's a real word) sneaked in an insult or two against the culture that produced the original. If you want examples, you can go look here.

Hell, I've heard that people have tried to Americanize Harry Potter. Of course, this being a hypothetical American film it would most likely cast each and every single villain as having a distinct British accent.

I saw the tittle and I swear the song Amerika came to mind.

The video is very true as well. It's funny because America likes to brand things and all. But it's china/india countires like that who make the products

(if that makes any sense)
