I never did get this, I mean I always said thank you but I never put any thought into it at all. Sort of like a reflex, you know? Just one of those things I did without thinking about. Shouldn't they thank you though? since you're the customer spending the money? When I didn't say thank you I always just say "have a nice day/night/weekend etc.

So is it neccesary to thank the cashier after you make a purchase? I always make a point to have polite conversation, you know their jobs aren't the most exciting or rewarding so sometimes the little things like asking how their doing can really brighten up someones day. It was only today I just wondered if you're supposed to thank them. Sorta like wearing underwear its one of those things thats automatic :P

I don't think it matters, but I usually only say thanks if they do.

It is courtesy to thank them for providing you with their service, and it is courtesy for them to thank you for shopping at their business.

*shrugs*

I don't know if I am SUPPOSED to thank them, but I do it anyway. Just seems like common courtesy. The employee sort of HAS to thank me at the risk of getting fired, so it just sort of seems like a jerk move to DELIBERATELY avoid saying "thanks" to them just because I totally don't have to.

We exchanged money/goods, then we extend "thank you's". Really just seems like sort of a formality to me. But what the hell...it doesn't hurt me to say thanks, so I say thanks.

But yeah...when I shop at stores (particularly stores that I like), I like to tell them that I appreciate what they're giving me. Any way you look at it, they're offering me service. They're not the only ones getting something out of the relationship...if it wasn't benefitting me, then I wouldn't shop there. So yeah, I generally say thanks, unless I just plain get horrible service.

What's the alternative? Just nod and leave? Seems kinda silly.

We usually both say thankyou. Your both helping eachother, and it doesn't take lots of energy to say it.

It depends...I thank them if they're polite and not terrible at their job. There was one time I purchased some alcohol and they carded the person with me as well...which I still do not believe is a policy. Either way they wouldn't sell it to me because supposedly it was store policy to not sell it to you if the people with you are not of age. I would like to know what they do if a mother comes in and purchases a bottle of wine and has her children with her. I did not thank that guy.

maybe he did it incase you were buying it for someone of minor age, but ofcourse if its a mom and a bunch of small kids they problably wont ask.

That absolutely IS policy at many places.

Same as the whole "check the ID of EVERYONE who looks under 40" policy. If you're a regular custom and they know you, they might IGNORE that policy instead of carding you every single damn time. But officially, they're breaking store policy and they could absolutely get fired for it.

What would they do if a mother came in with her five year old kids? Well in all likelihood they'd exercise some COMMON SENSE and sell her the wine anyway, even though official policy says not to. Just like how they might stop asking for your ID if you go there every night, even though official policy says that they can get fired for not asking for your ID every single time.

It's none of their business if I AM of age. I've purchases alcohol there many times and never had an issue before so I do not believe that it is their policy.

Unless it's ILLEGAL for them to deny you a sale on those grounds, then it's their business if they SAY it's their business.

Furthermore, ignoring store policy the first 9 times doesn't mean that someone won't follow store policy the 10th time. I've bought cigarettes and alcohol from stores, while being underaged and while failing to provide any ID. That happens, if for no other reason than that some people just plain don't give a ****. But I absolutely GUARANTEE that every single time it happened, the person who sold me the **** was violating store policy (in adition to the law).

It's a common courtesy. I was a cashier once, and it really does go a long way when a customer is polite enough to say "Thank you." So, I always make sure I do the same when I'm a customer.

you dont have to, but i like to. There are little/no negatives for being polite, and if it makes their day just a little better or puts a smile on their face, then im happy :)

Why not? Not only is it polite, but what happend was you just made a trade. Cashier says thanks for the money, you say thanks for the items. That's how transactions work.

I always do. It's natural. I'm not thanking them for letting me purchase something, I'm thanking them for serving me, the same way I say thank you when a waitress places my food in front of me. It's just being polite.

It's the polite thing to do. It is far from a requirement though.

I can relate to this, having to serve people who are rude is rough, however when a person offers you a warm smile or even expressing any form of politeness, no matter how subtle, does melt a bit of the jadedness I feel that accumulates throughout the day in service.

Saying "thank you" to people serving me has been ingrained into my nature. Not thanking a cashier for instance, is not ethically or morally wrong in my eyes. Nevertheless, it can make a person feel better, don't underestimate the value of what a simple "thank you" can do.
