Personally did not mind soldiers wearing berets. Patrol hat seems more appropiate anyways especially in working conditions.

They're not getting rid of it. The beret is only going to be part of the dress uniform now, which makes a lot of sense.
That does make sense, you don't need to wear a beret in combat unless you want your brain slammed out of your head ninety to nothing. They're not getting rid of it. The beret is only going to be part of the dress uniform now, which makes a lot of sense.

I remember my dad, who was 101st airborne, always complained about when they started letting people besides airborne wear them.
But yeah, keep them for dress. Give them something more work appropriate.
From what I've heard, soldiers have wanted this for a while because the beret doesn't keep the sun out of your eyes like a regular patrol cap does.
Special Forces wears a beret, Airborne wears a beret, but the beret they took for regular soldiers was the Rangers beret....so they had to change their color. Don't know where your dad got that....I remember my dad, who was 101st airborne, always complained about when they started letting people besides airborne wear them.

Special Forces are keeping their green berets. The regular soldiers aren't keeping theirs for every day use.
Finally. The beret is supposed to be for the elite (Rangers, Airborne, Special Forces), not every soldier so everyone feels "special". Most people didn't even know how to wear it and it just looked goofy on them.

The beret was never worn in combat...it was part of the garrison uniform.
good. I hated wearing those things in the heat. Not only that, but they were a pain in the ass to keep clean.
Patrol caps are much more practical.
Hey, make pasta, not war. I thought you knew better  Pasta is italian.[QUOTE="JustPlainLucas"]Probably because they were French.ImBananas
how stuff like this even makes the news is simply beyond my comprehensionBiancaDKBREAKING NEWS! The US Army as issued new socks!
Usually a beret is reserved for more specialty fields. In the Air Force only security forces, combat controllers, SERE and pararescue rangers could wear berets. When you get deployed to the desert, though, you always wear a field cap and a helmet. Never a beret,
Not sure why the Army is doing this, since I think the beret looks s***-hot, but hey, it's their call.
The beret's a piece of s***. It gets dirty, and you can't clean it. If you stuff it in your pocket it gets misshapen. It doesn't keep the sun out of your eyes. It's hot as hell in the summer. It gets soaking wet in the rain, chills your noggin, and takes an eternity to dry out. It's seriously one of the worst hats ever made. I have no idea what Jamie Hyneman is thinking.
Anyway, I'm glad they're consigning to dress-up use only. I think they should just give the Rangers back the black beret. I can't imagine the regular Army will miss it that much.

Nobody wears a beret in combat (unless you're in G.I. Joe).
