I like the show and do laugh at parts, but the way everyone raves on about it has left me a little puzzled.
It has a 9.3 rating on IMDB.
Does anyone else feel this show is over rated?

Canada here. Absolutely not, one of the funniest shows of all time along with Flight of the Conchords.
Most shows that get cancelled get better reception because the writers are still at their best, tons of American shows go on for far too long. Arrested Development only had 53 episodes which was just right. Hopefully the new episodes will remain good just because they've had such a big break from it.Initially no. Its a good show with an interesting charm all its own.
However, its sort of become that "hip" show to like because it got canceled.

Not at all (US here). My friends hyped it up to me in the months before I watched it, and even with high expectations, I was blown away. I thought it was pretty standard until the 9th or 10th episode of season 1 though--it takes some time to get cooking.FunkyhamsterI've already seen all the episodes and am currently on my second run through (just finished season 2). I enjoy the show but maybe the humor just isn't for me

While what you say is true, I still can't help but feel AD become the Kingdom Hearts of Sitcoms.
Truly the most overrated show of all time. The fans of it are flat out pretentious morons who claim that it is the greatest show to ever grace God's green earth. TonyDanzaFan
1/10 for getting me to reply
Nah, Lost, The Office, 30 Rock and Big Bang Theory are most overrated out there. Plenty of people hate The Office and Lost, and a TON of people, especially on the 'net, despise The Big Bang Theory. The only responses I EVER see to AD is that it is the greatest show ever made. It's not. I watched the entire first season and part of the second on netflix, and it is just not funny. Buster is funny, and Will Arnett is funny, but that is it. The show is pretentious, and the fans make me want to blow my brains out. You can't even say you dislike the show because you'll get belittled because "you're too stupid to get it!" No, I get it, and it's not f*cking funny.[QUOTE="TonyDanzaFan"]Truly the most overrated show of all time. mitu123

if you don't pay complete attention to it or watch it repeatedly or on a consistent basis you miss most of the jokes. Sure you can still pick up on the physical comedy bits but most of the word play will be lost on you.
the show is too intelligent for the random moron that watches FOX

Personally I find it so and I tend to get a "trying too hard" vibe whenever I've attempted to make a go of it. But I understand why people would find it appealing so as long as it makes them happy then I certainly wouldn't rain on their parade.

Even the long running UK shows never hit close to that. I think American shows really need to take the 12-20 episodes maximum route. They will have less chance of becoming stagnant, every episode is likely to be great because ideas wont be repeated, and most importantly they wrap up the story before it gets cancelled. US Office 173 episodes, UK Office 14 episodes. I can pretty much guarantee the UK Office has a better consistency of being funny. Saying that Arrested Development is really funny, but I prefer they just ended it as is rather than doing a movie and all the other stuff they seem to be planning.Initially no. Its a good show with an interesting charm all its own.

Stagnant depends on the talent working on the show....some shows are stagnant the first season.Initially no. Its a good show with an interesting charm all its own.

My exact point right here. Watching a certain television show does not determine intelligence.if you don't pay complete attention to it or watch it repeatedly or on a consistent basis you miss most of the jokes. Obviously watching the Wiggles and watching Breaking Bad are on complete ends of the spectrum. I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about idiots who somehow think that their brain works at a higher level because they watch a certain television show. Just because you watch Arrested Development doesn't mean you are somehow more intelligent than somebody who watches Family Guy. People like different sh*t.[QUOTE="TonyDanzaFan"]

You can be too dumb to understand the jokes, the double entendres, the references. The show doesnt exactly attract the same crowd that FOX panders to with such shows as the one where people compete against animals in feats of strength. Get it now?
Arrested Development is a bit different from the dime a dozen sitcoms that litter the network landscape that provide laughtracks to tell the audience when to laugh.

what about Dr. Who? It's delivered us 5 decades of camp and bad special effects.

That is true, there is also soaps like EastEnders and Coronation Street, but generally we tend to have shorter 6-12 episodes 2 series max. Even Only Fools and Horses which went on from 1981 to 2003 with a couple of gaps, had 65 episodes. They just repeat them so much it seems like there are 1000s.Please Log In to post.
